Benson provided vague answers, stating that her office strives to remove deceased voters as information⁤ is received. Murphy cited a lawsuit⁤ from the Public Interest Legal Foundation, claiming that ⁢nearly 26,000 dead voters were still registered as of ‍2021. His questions to Benson about dead people registered to vote in Michigan brought incomplete, indirect answers.

He brought up a lawsuit by the Public Interest Legal Foundation, which alleged that as of 2021, there were close to 26,000 dead voters on Michigan’s voter rolls. Greg Murphy, a Republican from North Carolina, questioned Michigan’s Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson about the presence of deceased individuals on the state’s voter rolls. Benson refrained from providing a direct yes or no answer. Murphy pressed her, asking, “Why are dead people still on your voter rolls?” and insisted she confirm whether there were deceased individuals registered to vote. Benson responded that they strive to remove such names as soon as they receive relevant information.

Murphy was among several lawmakers who interrogated secretaries of state regarding election integrity during a Committee on House Administration session that morning. He referenced a lawsuit by the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), which claimed that nearly 26,000 deceased voters remained registered in Michigan as of 2021 and accused Benson of not taking sufficient action to address this issue. When Murphy asked why it took legal action for these names to be removed from the rolls, Benson noted that the lawsuit had been dismissed.

A district judge ruled in favor of Benson’s office for conducting ongoing maintenance of voter lists and dismissed PILF’s case; however, PILF has since appealed this decision to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Additionally, Committee Chairman Bryan Steil from Wisconsin questioned Benson about Michigan’s collaboration with President Joe Biden’s Small Business Administration (SBA) under what is informally known as the “Bidenbucks” program aimed at increasing voter registration among specific demographics like college students and American Indians. This initiative stems from an executive order signed by Biden in 2021 requiring federal agencies to partner with approved nonpartisan organizations for voter registration efforts.

Benson confirmed during the hearing that Michigan was unique in having such an agreement with Biden’s SBA but denied having seen or contributed input into their strategic plan related to this initiative when pressed by Steil.

Steil expressed concern over federal agencies using taxpayer funds for partisan voting efforts without transparency regarding their strategic plans.

Murphy also raised concerns about how Biden’s Department of Veterans Affairs is enrolling voters in Michigan and suggested these outreach programs target Democratic districts—a claim which Benson refuted by stating that online registration is available to everyone without bias towards any political party.

In another part of the hearing involving New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver—who is also a Democrat—Steil asked if requiring photo identification would enhance public confidence in elections. Toulouse Oliver disagreed but acknowledged New Mexico does have various methods for verifying identity when voting; however, her own office indicated no ID is needed for statewide elections except during initial registration under certain conditions.

Murphy criticized claims against voter ID requirements as unfounded and argued they stemmed from issues surrounding transparency within election processes while suggesting there may be motives behind opposing such measures aimed at ensuring eligible voting only

https://thefederalist.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot-2024-09-11-at-10.53.32%E2%80%AFAM-e1726075313162-1024x558.png
[546
40666,32644,40665,40667,32643
post-2339815","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-federalist","tag-dead-voters","tag-election-integrity","tag-mi-secretary-of-state","tag-michigan-elections","tag-voter-rolls
https://thefederalist.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot-2024-09-11-at-10.53.32%E2%80%AFAM-e1726075313162-1024x558.png
["GET
