This narrative has been repeated countless times and has likely been debunked if you’ve taken the time to look into it. While discussing the infamous “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, Harris accused former President Donald Trump of endorsing a group of white supremacists who ultimately killed a counter-protester. In reference to Trump’s response to this tragedy, she stated: “What did the president then say? ‘There were fine people on each side.’”

In a debate where moderators rigorously fact-checked Trump at every turn, it was surprising that they didn’t challenge Harris on this point. Perhaps they felt it had already been thoroughly addressed by others and that her comments reflected desperation. It’s important to note that this claim has not only been dismissed by conservative media but also by Snopes—a fact-checking site not typically aligned with Trump—labeling it as false.

The events of August 11 and 12, 2017—the so-called Unite the Right rally protesting the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee—turned violent as neo-Nazis and white supremacists clashed with leftist counterprotesters. One self-identified white supremacist drove his car into a crowd, resulting in one death and numerous injuries.

During his media briefing about these events, Trump remarked there were “very fine people on both sides,” specifically referring to those who believed they were attending to protest against removing the statue. He clarified: “You had people in that group… who were there to protest taking down what they considered an important statue.” However, he condemned neo-Nazis and white nationalists outright.

Now more than seven years after Charlottesville, Kamala Harris invoked “very fine people” once again while simultaneously labeling nearly everything her opponent said as false—often without providing evidence for her claims.
