Initially, during her first presidential campaign in 2019, Harris unequivocally ‍stated her support for ‌banning fracking and offshore drilling. However, as⁣ the 2024⁣ election approaches, her campaign has distanced itself ⁢from those statements, branding claims of‌ her supporting ‍a‌ ban ⁢as “false”, a move ⁢perceived as politically strategic⁤ to avoid ⁣alienating voters in critical swing states like ⁢Pennsylvania.

The article⁣ outlines ⁤how, despite her denial of previous ‌positions on fracking, ‌the Biden-Harris administration has utilized‍ various regulatory ‍measures⁤ to limit ⁢fossil fuel production since taking office. Under President Biden’s leadership, executive actions sought to end projects such as the Keystone⁤ XL Pipeline, and his administration faced criticism for ‌issuing fewer oil and gas leases than any previous administration since Harry Truman.

Ultimately,⁤ the article‌ suggests ‍that, while Harris has adjusted her Campaign rhetoric, the underlying ⁤policies and regulatory ⁣pressures that her administration would continue reflect a ‍commitment to reducing fossil fuel reliance, mirroring those of the current administration.

Vice President Kamala Harris can’t give a genuine answer about her opposition to fracking because she knows doing so would cost her the election.

In July, less than four months before the election, the Harris campaign revealed the Democrats’ new presidential nominee suddenly had a change of heart about the technology that revolutionized American energy. Harris finally published her own issues platform on her campaign website this week, but portions of the platform were merely copied and pasted from Biden’s page.

While the Biden-Harris administration never banned fracking or offshore drilling, that doesn’t mean they didn’t try. Biden launched a presidential assault on American energy on his first day in office, when he rained down executive orders killing the Keystone XL Pipeline along with opportunities for oil and gas drilling on public lands.

The new president then signed a moratorium on new leasing and drilling permits on U.S. lands and waterways on day two, and he did not resume oil and gas leases until June 2022, after a federal court struck down the illegal moratorium. By the time leases did finally come back on a limited basis, Biden’s Department of the Interior had raised the cost of drilling with a 50 percent spike in royalty rates to top off a cascade of new regulations.

In his first two years in office, Biden issued oil and gas leases for fewer acres than every president since Harry Truman, according to The Wall Street Journal. At one point the nationwide average exceeded $5 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. In July, just a few months before the election, the Harris campaign announced that the Democratic nominee had unexpectedly shifted her position on this pivotal energy technology. This change of heart was communicated through a statement from a campaign spokesperson to media outlets like The Hill and Politico, which labeled former President Donald Trump’s assertion that she would ban fracking as “false.” However, Trump was merely referencing Harris’s own words from her initial presidential campaign in 2019 when she stated unequivocally, “There’s no question I’m in favor of banning fracking,” during a CNN town hall. When asked if she would also ban offshore drilling, Harris responded affirmatively and claimed to have worked on it.

Even if the Vice President has abandoned her previous opposition to fracking or offshore drilling bans, it doesn’t prevent a potential Harris administration from implementing regulations that could effectively phase out fossil fuels. The Democratic National Committee’s platform recently reiterated support for President Joe Biden’s policies multiple times. Although this slip may have been an awkward mistake, it also revealed that Harris intends to continue Biden’s agenda while presenting herself as a candidate for change.

Harris released her own policy platform this week; however, much of it appeared to be directly lifted from Biden’s website. While neither the Biden-Harris administration officially banned fracking or offshore drilling during their tenure, they certainly made attempts to limit fossil fuel production through various means. To secure votes in Pennsylvania—an essential swing state—Harris will likely downplay any past efforts against these energy sources.

From his first day in office onward, President Biden took significant steps against affordable energy production by issuing executive orders halting projects like the Keystone XL Pipeline and restricting oil and gas drilling on public lands. He imposed a moratorium on new leasing and permits for U.S. lands and waters right away and did not resume these leases until June 2022 after legal challenges forced him to do so; even then they were limited with increased costs due to higher royalty rates.

In his initial two years as president, Biden authorized fewer oil and gas leases than any president since Harry Truman according to The Wall Street Journal. Reports indicated he approved over 1,000 fewer oil permits compared with Trump during similar timeframes.

The Wall Street Journal editorial board highlighted numerous regulatory measures taken by the Biden-Harris administration aimed at reducing oil and gas output—including stricter methane regulations by the EPA—and financial incentives favoring alternative energy sources over fossil fuels while mandating federal agencies consider climate risks when making decisions about projects based on CO2 emissions.

The EPA has proposed rules potentially leading existing natural gas plants toward closure while considering designating Texas’s Permian Basin as non-compliant with ozone standards—a move requiring significant cuts in production levels. Should Ms. Harris pursue these initiatives further towards achieving carbon-free electricity by 2035?

Meanwhile Americans faced soaring gasoline prices throughout 2022—with averages surpassing $5 per gallon at one point—suggesting additional regulations under an administration led by someone who previously endorsed ambitious green policies could lead prices even higher.

Tristan Justice serves as western correspondent for The Federalist and authors Social Justice Redux—a conservative newsletter focused on culture health wellness—and has contributed pieces for various publications including The Washington Examiner among others after graduating from George Washington University where he studied political science alongside journalism

[546
36279,5499,32438,5270,33430
post-2339220","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-federalist","tag-environmental-policy","tag-fracking","tag-kamala-harris","tag-regulation","tag-renewable-energy
["GET
