As⁢ the House Republicans prepare to vote ⁤on a six-month continuing resolution to ⁢extend government spending, the inclusion of⁢ the SAVE Act has become a contentious issue. Former President Donald Trump and ‍his allies ‍plan to leverage Democratic opposition ⁣to the bill, framing it⁤ as evidence ⁤of a lack‌ of commitment to election integrity, which they can ⁢use to question ⁣the legitimacy of‍ the‍ upcoming November⁢ elections.

Despite existing⁤ federal laws requiring ⁢voter registration forms to confirm citizenship, Republicans express concerns about‌ the sufficiency of current voter ID regulations. They aim ⁤to use their push for the SAVE‌ Act to highlight perceived vulnerabilities in the ⁢electoral system. Democratic leaders and the Biden administration ⁤are staunchly opposed to ⁤the ‌legislation,⁤ labeling it as a partisan tactic, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries urging for a ⁢resolution free from such divisive proposals.

Amidst this backdrop,⁤ Trump continues ‌to propagate claims of widespread electoral fraud, asserting that Democrats are attempting⁤ to‍ introduce illegal voters into the electoral process. While he has recently acknowledged‍ his narrow ‌loss in the 2020⁢ election, Trump maintains that the electoral‍ system is compromised, and his ⁢supporters express frustration over the implications ‍of this⁤ narrative. The ‌article reveals a landscape of heightened political tensions as⁢ both parties prepare for the upcoming⁣ election, focusing ⁣on‍ election integrity‌ as a key battleground.

Trump and allies hitch stolen election claims onto SAVE Act

As Republicans look to attach their election integrity bill to a must-pass government spending bill, former President Donald Trump and his allies are preparing to use Democratic opposition to lay the groundwork for claims of a stolen election before voters even cast their ballots in the November election.

House Republicans are poised to vote this week on a six-month continuing resolution that would extend current spending levels until late March, pushing off negotiations for the fiscal 2025 budget until lawmakers know who will be in the White House next year. Additionally, individuals must provide proof of a driver’s license or Social Security number for election officials to verify their identity in U.S. databases.

However, some Republicans have lamented the law does not go far enough to require additional scrutiny on whether individuals are eligible to vote.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), locked in a competitive bid to become the next Senate GOP leader, downplayed Trump’s stolen election comments as nothing more than concern about voter ID.

“We know from polling that voter ID is enormously popular on a bipartisan basis,” he said. “I honestly don’t see what the big deal is.”

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), a close ally of Trump, also downplayed his remarks on election integrity: “If people are interfering with elections, it’s illegal. There ought to be a bit of a clamp down on it. I think that would help restore some trust into our system.”

But Democrats oppose the proposal as a “scare tactic” that feeds into unfounded claims that millions of illegal immigrants are voting in federal elections.

As a result, Trump and his allies are planning to use that opposition in their favor, preparing arguments for widespread election fraud if Trump loses in November.

“In each state, we are deploying lawyers to help back the Constitution and the right to vote when you have the right to vote — not to flood illegal aliens into this country in an attempt to shake it down because you can’t win with the American vote. The Democrats can’t win lawfully, so they’re trying to make sure that they turn their cheek the other way instead of enforcing the laws.”

Trump has long amplified unsubstantiated claims of Democratic cheating in 2020, which he has said is responsible for his close loss to Biden. However, Trump has in recent weeks acknowledged he lost “by a whisker,” one of his most direct acceptances of defeat.

That concession prompted backlash from some of his furthest-to-the-right supporters who lamented their efforts to help overturn the election results over Trump’s claims they were fraudulent.

“So, why did we do Stop the Steal? Why did anyone go to Jan. 6? Why did anyone go to jail?” Nick Fuentes, a hard-right political commentator who participated in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, said on his podcast last week. “It would have been good to know that before 1,600 people got charged. With the House set to vote on a six-month continuing resolution that would maintain current funding levels until late March, negotiations for the fiscal 2025 budget will be postponed until after next year’s presidential election. However, Republicans want to include the SAVE Act—a GOP-sponsored bill that would ban noncitizens from voting in federal elections—despite strong opposition from Democrats. This opposition is likely to be used by Republicans to portray Democrats as lacking commitment to election integrity and jeopardizing the upcoming November elections.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), who authored the SAVE Act, expressed his desire for all Republicans to support it and criticized Democrats for allegedly prioritizing voter recruitment over citizen-only voting rights during an interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck. Congressional Democrats have already voiced their disapproval of attaching the SAVE Act to any spending bill, labeling it a “partisan and extreme” measure that is “unserious and unacceptable.” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) emphasized in a letter that Congress should pass a short-term resolution focused on completing appropriations without partisan policy changes influenced by Trump’s Project 2025.

The White House has also rejected this funding proposal, with President Joe Biden threatening a veto if it reaches his desk. Trump played a significant role in developing the SAVE Act alongside House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), citing concerns about illegal immigrants potentially casting votes in November without needing proof of citizenship under current laws. He has accused Democrats of “importing voters” from abroad—a claim echoed by allies like Elon Musk.

Despite existing federal laws requiring voter registration forms that affirm citizenship under penalty of perjury, some Republicans argue these measures do not go far enough in ensuring eligibility verification for voters. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) downplayed Trump’s claims about stolen elections as mere concerns regarding voter ID requirements while Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) suggested there should be stricter enforcement against electoral interference.

Democrats view these proposals as fearmongering tactics feeding into baseless assertions about widespread illegal voting among immigrants. Consequently, Trump and his allies plan to leverage Democratic resistance as evidence of potential electoral fraud if he loses again in November.

Trump’s attorney Alina Habba stated they are mobilizing legal support across states to uphold constitutional voting rights against what they perceive as attempts by Democrats to undermine lawful processes due to their inability to win fairly at the polls.

While Trump has previously amplified unverified claims regarding cheating during the 2020 election—blaming it for his narrow loss—he recently acknowledged losing “by a whisker,” which drew criticism from some far-right supporters who felt misled about efforts made following those claims.

Despite occasional admissions of defeat, Trump continues asserting that Democratic cheating occurs and even threatened prosecution against election officials involved in such activities through posts on social media platforms like Truth Social.

The Harris campaign condemned Trump’s rhetoric, accusing him of outlining dictatorial intentions aimed at punishing political adversaries while emphasizing Vice President Kamala Harris’s commitment toward serving all Americans regardless of party affiliation ahead of this November’s elections

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/donald-trump-fraud-wisconsin-1024x592.webp
[538
40517,32603,34333,3634,32076
post-2338966","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-washington-examiner","tag-election-claims","tag-political-news","tag-save-act","tag-trump","tag-washington-examiner
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/donald-trump-fraud-wisconsin-1024x592.webp
["GET
