This decision reverses a previous ruling by the Michigan Court of Appeals, which had stated there was no legitimate reason for Kennedy to withdraw. The high court’s ruling on Tuesday puts an end to Kennedy’s legal challenges in Michigan. The court noted that Kennedy did not demonstrate a right to such extraordinary relief. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has consistently referenced state law indicating that minor party candidates cannot remove themselves from the ballot, and since Kennedy was nominated by the Natural Law Party, he qualified for inclusion on it. A judge in Michigan had previously sided with Benson regarding Kennedy’s requirement to remain on the ballot, emphasizing that elections are serious matters and officials are not required to cater to candidates’ requests at their discretion. In August, Kennedy suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed former President Donald Trump while advising supporters in strongly partisan states to vote for him but expressing intentions to withdraw from ballots in swing states so as not to detract votes from Trump based on polling data suggesting this effect.
