This issue is being highlighted by both political parties. The poll, conducted from August 12-16 with 1,003 registered voters in Arizona, has a margin of error of 3.09%. The report notes that while inflation, immigration, and abortion have traditionally dominated the election discourse, affordable housing has now solidified its position as a critical issue for voters in Arizona. Its significance is on par with these other major topics.

Despite this growing concern among voters, neither Republicans nor Democrats have prominently featured affordable housing in their campaign agendas. David Byler, chief of research at NPI, remarked that while parties are well-versed in discussing immigration and abortion issues—allowing voters to know whom to trust—housing presents a different challenge due to its rising costs becoming an issue across party lines.

A study from the University of Arizona reveals that over 30% of residents are experiencing housing burdens—spending more than 30% of their income on housing—which can hinder their ability to afford other essential needs like healthcare and food. There is currently a deficit of approximately 133,684 affordable homes available for Arizonans. Notably, even among middle-income households, around 37% face similar cost challenges.

In response to these issues, Governor Katie Hobbs has initiated programs aimed at assisting first-time homebuyers by allocating $13 million for down payment support. She expressed her understanding of the struggles associated with mortgage payments and emphasized how homeownership can provide financial stability and community ties.

As candidates prepare for the election season in this pivotal state where many residents continue to grapple with affordability challenges, Byler suggests that both parties have an opportunity here: addressing an important issue without any clear advantage or established messaging could be key for electoral success regarding housing policies

[32431,18297,4472,4344
post-2338624","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-2024-election","tag-affordability","tag-arizona","tag-housing
["GET
