(AP) &mdash;<\/strong> Thousands of homes and buildings were threatened Sunday by an out-of-control wildfire burning in the foothills of a national forest east of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Los-Angeles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Los Angeles<\/a>, amid a dayslong heat wave that pushed temperatures into the triple digits across the region.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fire.ca.gov\/incidents\/2024\/9\/5\/line-fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">State firefighters<\/a>&nbsp;said 8,733 structures were threatened, including single and multi-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>family<\/a> homes and commercial buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inciweb.wildfire.gov\/incident-information\/cabdf-line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Line Fire<\/a>&nbsp;was burning along the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest, about 65 miles (105 kilometers) east of LA. As of Sunday morning, the blaze had charred about 27 square miles (70 square kilometers) of grass and chaparral, leaving a thick cloud of dark smoke blanketing the area.<\/p>\n<p>County officials declared an emergency Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Extreme temperatures, wind and lightning strikes have allowed the fire to grow rapidly,&rdquo; the county said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/firefighters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>firefighters<\/a> were expected to arrive Sunday.
