Trump faces up to 136 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of 34 counts of bookkeeping fraud.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-67b000314c19bf920b15963da625522e fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-67b000314c19bf920b15963da625522e\"><\/div>\n<p>Bragg initially indicted Trump on claims that he violated the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) when his former attorney Michael Cohen paid pornographic actress Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an alleged affair.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/12\/alvin-bragg-kicks-off-another-frenzied-lawfare-trial-with-weakest-case-against-trump-yet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nondisclosure deals<\/a>&nbsp;like Trump&rsquo;s are perfectly legal and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/15\/trumps-strongest-new-york-defense-has-nothing-to-do-with-alvin-bragg-or-judge-merchan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">don&rsquo;t meet the threshold<\/a>&nbsp;for criminal charges beyond a misdemeanor. Bragg, who campaigned on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/09\/magazine\/alvin-bragg-donald-trump-trial.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vengeance<\/a>&nbsp;against the Republican, however, ignored the FEC and Department of Justice&rsquo;s decision not to charge Trump over the payment and pursued a felony prosecution. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/05\/12-anti-trump-pundits-and-lawmakers-who-think-braggs-case-is-terrible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Several notably anti-Trump legal experts and media mouthpieces<\/a>&nbsp;warned that Bragg&rsquo;s case was weak and<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/05\/alvin-braggs-trump-indictment-is-even-more-pathetic-and-partisan-than-we-could-have-imagined\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=alvin-braggs-trump-indictment-is-even-more-pathetic-and-partisan-than-we-could-have-imagined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;reeked of partisanship.<\/a>&nbsp;Merchan only furthered those suspicions by entertaining&nbsp;Bragg&rsquo;s demands&nbsp;to gag Trump. <\/p>\n<p>Merchan originally planned to sentence Trump less than one week&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BreakingNews\/status\/1796290729788035334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">before<\/a>&nbsp;the Republican National Convention in July. He then moved the hearing to September 18.
