For over a decade, Walz has held meetings with the Hormel Institute and toured the research center, which has thanked Walz for securing it millions of dollars in funding, records show. <\/p>\n<p>News of the ties between the Walz-allied research center and the WIV comes as the Democratic vice presidential nominee faces a congressional investigation over his &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Letter-to-Director-Wray-08162024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>extensive<\/a>&rdquo; connections to China. This year, the U.S. government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3004747\/hhs-suspends-funding-organization-that-funded-wuhan-virus-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>halted<\/a> federal funding to a nonprofit group that worked with the lab in Wuhan &mdash; where the FBI has said COVID-19 likely emerged. Walz has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/11\/us\/tim-walz-china.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reportedly<\/a> traveled 30 times to China, including for his honeymoon, and he <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/06\/us-news\/tim-walz-has-fawned-over-communist-china-doesnt-have-to-be-adversarial-relationship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> in 2016 that he does not &ldquo;fall into the category that China necessarily needs to be an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/walzing-with-xi-taking-kamala-harris-vp-picks-china-ties-seriously-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Walzing with Xi: Taking Kamala Harris VP pick\u2019s China ties seriously - Washington Examiner\">adversarial relationship&#038;rdquo<\/a>; with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For 80+ years, the Hormel Institute has helped pave the way for Minnesota to lead in biomedical innovation,&rdquo; Walz <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovTimWalz\/status\/1783849764208947701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> in April of the Minnesota group, which Fox News previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/harris-vp-pick-spent-years-promoting-research-facility-collaborated-chinese-military-company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reported<\/a> is linked to a Chinese military-backed company called Beijing Genomics Institute. &ldquo;It was great to stop by their facilities yesterday in Austin to see that work in action.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Hormel Institute is based in Austin, Minnesota. In Walz&rsquo;s telling, the organization &ldquo;fits with where we see ourselves as a state [in the future] &hellip; a future around &hellip; green energy, sustainable agriculture, and the ability to feed a very hungry world &hellip; and the ability to be one of the nation&rsquo;s designated biotech hubs,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/hi.umn.edu\/news\/no-longer-secret-gov-tim-walz-praises-mbic-project-hormel-institute-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according<\/a> to a Hormel Institute press release.<\/p>\n<p>As a congressman, Walz helped secure over $2 million for the Hormel Institute&rsquo;s technology acquisitions and was a &ldquo;strong advocate for The Hormel Institute, including by supporting its major expansions,&rdquo; the Minnesota-based group said in April of this year. Moreover, in 2008, Walz reportedly pushed for a $5 million federal earmark for the University of Minnesota-housed group and has visited the Hormel Institute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thehormelinstitute\/photos\/a.155852724474210\/1198819270177545\/?type=3&amp;rdid=fZolFi0W5qCSBUKX&amp;share_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fshare%2F3ZogoE6nbWnjYh54%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>discuss<\/a> ways to increase its federal funding.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, researchers at the Hormel Institute have teamed up with the Wuhan Institute of Virology on a variety of projects, including in 2020 for a COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2020.07.30.229187v1.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>study<\/a> and as <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38583515\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>recently<\/a> as this year on structural biology research.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The COVID-19&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2020.07.30.229187v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, titled &ldquo;A dynamic regulatory interface on SARS-CoV-2 RNA polymerase,&rdquo; was authored by four WIV researchers, three Hormel Institute researchers, and a Yale School of Medicine professor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the Hormel Institute also <a href=\"https:\/\/experts.umn.edu\/en\/publications\/structural-basis-of-bacterial-%CF%83sup28sup-mediated-transcription-re\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>disclosed<\/a> in the &ldquo;funding information&rdquo; section of a separate <em>EMBO Journal<\/em> study that it received &ldquo;help from the Core Facility and Technical Support&rdquo; of the WIV for &ldquo;radioactive and fluorescent tests,&rdquo; the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> found.<\/p>\n<p>Bin Liu, a professor at the Hormel Institute who is listed as working on the 2020 <em>EMBO Journal<\/em> study, attended Wuhan University, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/hi.umn.edu\/research\/faculty\/bin-liu-phd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>copy<\/a> of his resume. Other researchers for the study included those affiliated with the WIV, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and China&rsquo;s Zhengzhou University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wuhan-lab-kept-nih-funding-despite-trump-crackdown\/\" title=\"Wuhan Lab Kept NIH Funding Despite Trump Crackdown\">federal records show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Democratic vice presidential nominee Minnesota Gov. (AP Photo\/Jacquelyn Martin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Similarly, in January 2024, Hormel Institute researchers published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/gkad1231.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>study<\/a> on genes with the WIV&rsquo;s Lina He, Wei Zhou, and Yangbo Hu. The WIV was used for &ldquo;radioactive tests,&rdquo; according to page 10 of the study. <\/p>\n<p>The WIV&rsquo;s Yangbo Hu worked with the Hormel Institute&rsquo;s Dmytro Kompaniiets, Dong Wang, and Bin Liu on 2023 research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/trends\/microbiology\/abstract\/S0966-842X(23)00290-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>titled<\/a> &ldquo;Structure and molecular mechanism of bacterial transcription activation,&rdquo; among other collaborations. <\/p>\n<p>Formed in 1956, the WIV is overseen by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an institution reporting directly to the Chinese Communist Party&rsquo;s State Council. The WIV &ldquo;has engaged in classified research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chinese-military-engineered-mice-with-human-lungs-to-test-virus-report-says\/\" title=\"Chinese Military \u2018Engineered Mice With Human Lungs\u2019 To Test Virus, Report Says\">including laboratory animal experiments<\/a>, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/2017-2021.state.gov\/fact-sheet-activity-at-the-wuhan-institute-of-virology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according<\/a> to the State Department.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, University of Minnesota spokesman Jake Ricker insisted the school and the Hormel Institute have no &ldquo;formal affiliation&rdquo; with the WIV or Beijing Genomics Institute. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our discoveries are peer-reviewed and published in the public domain with appropriate attribution to those who contributed to each study,&rdquo; Ricker said. &ldquo;Research is conducted with the full commitment of the Hormel Institute and the university to compliance with federal disclosure, security, export controls, and sanctions rules.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>To Brian Cavanaugh, a former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>White House<\/a> National Security Council member, U.S. entities should not be collaborating at all with the WIV. The Hormel Institute&rsquo;s work with the WIV researchers is concerning, he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Wuhan Institute of Virology has direct ties to China&rsquo;s People&rsquo;s Liberation Army,&rdquo; Cavanaugh told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. &ldquo;The Hormel Institute is helping a foreign adversary.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Hormel Institute has other China ties that have drawn scrutiny. Its former executive director, Dr. Zigang Dong, resigned in 2019 after 18 years in the role. <\/p>\n<p>That&rsquo;s because Dong came under FBI investigation for his &ldquo;possible failure to report foreign backing when applying for grants,&rdquo; the <em>Austin Daily Herald<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austindailyherald.com\/2020\/02\/scientists-institutions-focus-on-maintaining-truth-in-the-midst-of-federal-probes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dong now works at China&rsquo;s Zhengzhou University, where he <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37873235\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>continues<\/a> to collaborate with researchers from the Hormel Institute, records show.
