Established over 120 years ago in the city, U.S. Steel announced on Wednesday that it would move out of Pittsburgh if Japanese-owned Nippon Steel’s $14.9 billion acquisition does not go through, which would have significant economic and symbolic repercussions for Pennsylvania. This statement comes amid reports that the Biden administration is likely to fulfill a promise to block the acquisition, a bipartisan effort supported by unions aimed at keeping the historic company under American ownership. U.S. Representative Chris Deluzio, D-Pa., criticized U.S. Steel for abandoning union workers who helped build the company in favor of cheaper labor from unorganized states, stating that their actions reflect a troubling anti-union stance reminiscent of historical corporate exploitation. The United Steel Workers Union represents 850,000 workers nationwide, including some from Nippon; about 4,000 are employed across Pennsylvania, Alabama, Virginia, and West Virginia. However, not all employees oppose the deal; on Wednesday thousands rallied outside U.S. Steel\u2019s headquarters in Pittsburgh advocating for the acquisition as a means to preserve jobs. David B. Burritt, President and CEO of U.S. Steel urged elected officials at both state and federal levels to recognize both the advantages of this deal and its potential consequences if it fails\u2014highlighting that without federal approval they will shift away from their blast furnaces like those at Mon Valley Works which is set for a $1 billion upgrade contingent on this deal going through.
