Karine Jean-Pierre reassured reporters Tuesday that &ldquo;it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections.&rdquo; Cue the nationwide sigh of relief: At last, we can sleep easy knowing noncitizens won&rsquo;t vote, because &mdash; surprise! &mdash; it&rsquo;s against the law.<\/p>\n<p>But do you know what else is also &ldquo;already illegal?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5d5b1c733c9970f212f95b5ff5d1da85 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5d5b1c733c9970f212f95b5ff5d1da85\"><\/div>\n<p>Drunk driving. Yet roughly one million people are arrested each year in the United States for drunk driving, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterliferecovery.com\/addiction\/drunk-driving-statistics\/#:~:text=Each%20year%2C%20one%20million%20individuals,behind%20the%20wheel%20each%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Better Life Recovery &amp; Wellness<\/a>, and &ldquo;results from surveys show that this number represents only a small portion of the actual number of alcohol-impaired drivers behind the wheel each year.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s also &ldquo;already illegal&rdquo; for someone under the age of 21 to buy or drink alcohol, yet 12.6 million people between the ages of 12 and 20 have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohols-effects-health\/alcohol-topics\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\/underage-drinking-united-states-ages-12-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> having at least one alcoholic drink in their life, according to the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s &ldquo;already illegal&rdquo; to steal a motor vehicle, yet <a href=\"https:\/\/ojjdp.ojp.gov\/statistical-briefing-book\/crime\/faqs\/ucr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">83,220 people were arrested<\/a> in 2020 for allegedly doing just that, according to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/ojjdp.ojp.gov\/statistical-briefing-book\/crime\/faqs\/ucr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">67,900 people<\/a> were also arrested in 2020 for alleged, &ldquo;already illegal&rdquo; robbery.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Pierre &mdash; who works for the administration that has seen <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/03\/biden-has-let-in-almost-as-many-foreigners-illegally-as-ellis-island-did-lawfully-in-60-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">millions<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/poll-majority-of-voters-want-biden-to-enact-tougher-immigration-policies\/\" title=\"POLL: Majority Of Voters Want Biden To Enact Tougher Immigration Policies\">people illegally enter<\/a> the United States &mdash; should know better than anyone that just because something is &ldquo;illegal&rdquo; doesn&rsquo;t mean it&rsquo;s not happening.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-65d2b8ea664df519663f32b916e7b9b3 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-65d2b8ea664df519663f32b916e7b9b3\"><\/div>\n<p>How else did <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-immigrant-voting-noncitizens-elections-explained-cf4c73b336147b5f5d9c2a22b2564994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">41 noncitizens cast a ballot<\/a> in North Carolina in 2016? Or how did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2019\/jan\/30\/pennsylvania-11000-non-citizens-registered-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11,198<\/a> noncitizens reportedly end up on Pennsylvania&rsquo;s voter rolls? We have been reliably informed that it can&rsquo;t happen because casting a ballot as a noncitizen or registering to vote as a noncitizen is &ldquo;already illegal!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It could be because the current federal voter registration form simply asks prospective voters to check a box affirming they&rsquo;re telling the truth that they are a citizen, which amounts to nothing more than the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/13\/without-the-save-act-the-only-thing-keeping-foreigners-from-voting-is-the-honor-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">honor system<\/a>, as Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, previously clarified in these pages.<\/p>\n<p>That&rsquo;s why <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/04\/between-funding-the-government-and-keeping-their-illegal-voting-hustle-we-all-know-what-dems-will-choose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Speaker Mike Johnson<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/article\/washington\/democrats-senators-unhappy-with-johnsons-government-funding-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> tying the Republican-led Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act to a continuing resolution that would fund the government through March.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/save-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAVE Act<\/a> would amend the 1993 National Voter Registration Act and require documentary proof of citizenship in order to register to vote. That means individuals who cannot prove their citizenship would not end up on the voter rolls.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ee15a9d2550e65bec6b8c59200faa6fc fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ee15a9d2550e65bec6b8c59200faa6fc\"><\/div>\n<p>You might think Democrats would support keeping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/japan-bans-new-entries-of-foreigners-after-virus-variant-arrives\/\" title=\"Japan bans new entries of foreigners after virus variant arrives\">foreign nationals<\/a> out of our elections after they spent years breathlessly lamenting alleged foreign election interference on behalf of former President Donald Trump. <\/p>\n<p>But it must have been fake outrage, because <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/10\/198-democrats-vote-against-bill-to-keep-foreign-nationals-out-of-american-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">198 Democrats voted against<\/a> the opportunity to safeguard our elections and keep foreign nationals out of them in July &mdash; and their reasoning was similar to that of Jean-Pierre&rsquo;s.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is against the law for noncitizens to register to vote and to vote in federal elections,&rdquo; Rep. Joseph Morelle, D-N.Y., previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/10\/198-democrats-vote-against-bill-to-keep-foreign-nationals-out-of-american-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in opposition to the bill.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We know that it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections,&rdquo; Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., said. &ldquo;Under current law, noncitizens would face up to five years in prison for attempting to vote in federal elections and even risk being deported.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But as The Federalist CEO and co-founder Sean Davis noted in a Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/seanmdav\/status\/1831355793066598732\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post<\/a> on X, banning states from &ldquo;confirming citizenship when votes are cast&rdquo; would &ldquo;be like having a law that bans speeding&hellip; and then bans any method for detecting speed.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"SnRBNapQGvlhmfgA1qOKJ2UubDszFr3oPyLTt7\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#8217;s illegal to speed, which is why no one ever speeds.<\/p>\n<p>Federal law states that it&#8217;s illegal for illegals to vote, and it also bans states from confirming citizenship when votes are cast. We\u2019ve been told repeatedly that this can&#8217;t happen since voting or registering as a noncitizen is \u201calready illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One reason could be that the current federal voter registration form merely asks applicants to affirm their citizenship by checking a box\u2014a system based solely on trust\u2014as previously pointed out by Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah).<\/p>\n<p>This context explains why Speaker Mike Johnson plans to link the Republican-led Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act with a continuing resolution aimed at funding government operations through March. The SAVE Act seeks to amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 by requiring documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration. Consequently, those unable to prove their citizenship would not appear on voter rolls.<\/p>\n<p>You might expect Democrats would support measures preventing foreign nationals from participating in elections after years of expressing concern over alleged foreign interference during Donald Trump&#8217;s presidency. However, their outrage seems insincere; when given an opportunity in July to protect our elections from foreign influence through legislation like SAVE Act, nearly all Democrats opposed it\u2014echoing sentiments similar to Jean-Pierre\u2019s assertions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is against the law for noncitizens to register and vote,&#8221; stated Rep. Joseph Morelle (D-N.Y.) while opposing this bill. Rep.
