However, addressing tough questions about her policy changes is not the focus of her celebrity-like campaign. Instead, Harris is participating in a popularity contest as the chosen candidate to secure the White House, which necessitates keeping her away from media scrutiny.

With less than two months until Election Day, Harris has dodged significant inquiries regarding abrupt shifts in her platform on topics such as fracking and immigration. As she prepares for what may be her only presidential debate next week in Philadelphia, she even attempted to avoid it after declining requests to extend the schedule for traditional debates among major party candidates.

According to Politico last week, Harris requested that ABC change debate rules to keep microphones “hot at all times” during discussions—this follows CNN’s decision in June to mute them once a candidate finished speaking. Brian Fallon, a spokesperson for Harris’s campaign, stated that they have informed ABC and other networks hosting potential October debates that both candidates’ microphones should remain live throughout. He suggested that Trump’s team prefers muted microphones because they doubt their candidate can maintain a presidential demeanor for 90 minutes without assistance.

If the Harris campaign genuinely wanted to demonstrate that she could “act presidential for 90 minutes,” it would be more effective for her to hold an actual 90-minute press conference rather than feigning phone conversations while avoiding reporters’ questions.

The muted microphone rule was initially requested by President Joe Biden and now contradicts Vice President Harris’s previous stance during her 2020 debate with Mike Pence when she insisted on being heard even without interruptions. The muted mics could undermine her strategy of creating memorable moments during debates with Trump.

As reported by Byron York from the Washington Examiner earlier this week, despite Trump requesting two additional debates this fall, Harris has limited herself to just two while hesitating even on participating in one. It remains uncertain whether she will agree to more interviews.

With early voting set to begin in Pennsylvania on September 16th and ballots soon being cast, voters are left without clear explanations regarding why there have been drastic changes in Harris’s positions since her last presidential run. She previously supported banning fracking but now opposes such measures; endorsed mandatory gun buyback programs before reversing course; removed “Medicare for All” from her platform after it was central during her 2019 campaign; and recently backed funding for a border wall which she had previously labeled “un-American.”

In fact, here’s what she wrote about it in her memoir from 2019: “A useless wall on the southern border would be nothing more than a symbol… standing against everything I value.”

Ultimately, Kamala Harris appears as a political opportunist who sees no benefit engaging with an already sympathetic press corps.
