June was very dry in Virginia and the driest on record for many areas of the state, according to Mike Wallace, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

“Tropical Storm Debby did provide relief to much of the state, but [it] was too late for much of the state’s corn crops,” Wallace told The Center Square in an email. “This year’s drought began in June, which is a prime growing month for corn in Virginia.”

The drought appears to have peaked in July, when 23 Virginia counties had Drought Disaster Designations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. While tropical storms are typically viewed negatively, Tropical Storm Debby did provide essential rainfall to certain areas in the state; however, it arrived too late for some crops. June was particularly dry across Virginia and marked the driest month on record for many regions, as noted by Mike Wallace from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. “Tropical Storm Debby offered relief to much of the state but came too late for many corn crops,” Wallace explained in an email to The Center Square. He added that this year’s drought began in June, a crucial growing period for corn in Virginia. The drought reached its peak in July when 23 counties received Drought Disaster Designations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Parts of Shenandoah Valley experienced “extreme drought,” while much of the state faced “severe drought,” according to data from the National Integrated Drought Information System. In late July, USDA announced that 15 localities were classified as primary disaster areas due to drought; farmers there and in an additional 15 neighboring areas may qualify for assistance through the Farm Service Agency. However, Brandon Reeves, executive director of the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association, pointed out that although federal aid is helpful, it often comes too late or is inadequate to cover losses incurred during such crises. “Federal disaster assistance is appreciated but frequently arrives after it’s needed and doesn’t fully compensate for losses… Farming involves significant risks because we rely on numerous uncontrollable factors like weather,” Reeves stated via email to The Center Square.
