Not a joke. For instance, the president of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company hired a detective to infiltrate Irish workingmen&rsquo;s organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Then, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/canals.org\/2023\/03\/08\/the-tragedy-of-the-molly-maguires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Canal Museum<\/a> in Easton, Pennsylvania, the detective&rsquo;s report became the basis for the 1877 hanging of ten workingmen accused of murder, arson and kidnapping. The detective, hired by the coal and iron company president, claimed that the men not only committed the crimes but that they belonged to a chapter of the Molly Maguires operating in America.<\/p>\n<p>The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania&rsquo;s modern state archives, however, cast serious doubt on the detective&rsquo;s conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;No one has ever produced a primary source document proving that the Molly Maguires existed as such&rdquo; in Pennsylvania, per the state&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/en\/agencies\/phmc\/pa-state-archives\/research-online\/research-guides\/molly-maguires.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archives website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It made no difference, of course, because the coal and iron company president succeeded in crushing organized labor. So they made a bogeyman of the powerless and used paid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ray-epps-given-probation-involvement-jan-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agents<\/a> to infiltrate one of their groups. The powerful accused many, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/federal-govt-sued-30m-wrongful-death-jan-6-protester-ashli-babbitt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed<\/a> some, and sent others to prison on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musk-destroys-jan-6-committee-tucker-carlson-s-narrative-shattering-new-footage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flimsy evidence<\/a>.
