The SEB ruled in May that Fulton County violated the law during the 2020 election when it double-scanned more than 3,000 ballots. However, left-leaning corporate media is criticizing these rules, suggesting they aim to trivialize the certification process. One specific regulation (Rule 183-1-12-.02) states that county election boards can fulfill their certification duties “after reasonable inquiry” confirming that the tabulation and canvassing are complete and accurate, reflecting a true count of all votes cast. Another rule (Rule 183-1-12-.12) allows board members to review “all election-related documentation created during elections” before certifying results.

Despite this, CBS News claims that ensuring accuracy could potentially “undermine election certification.” The media appears to be promoting a narrative favored by Democrats—including Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign—that suggests it is preferable to quickly approve elections without scrutiny rather than verify the correctness of the results. CBS News reporters have implied that these new rules may empower “election conspiracy theorists” nationwide in attempts to delay final result tabulations.

However, SEB member Janelle King emphasized in an interview with The Federalist that these regulations merely clarify county officials’ roles in verifying result accuracy as part of an essential certification process. She stated, “It’s not about the outcome; it’s about the process,” asserting that trust in outcomes stems from proper procedures being followed.

CNN echoed CBS’s unfounded assertions by reporting on how Georgia’s GOP-controlled election board passed rules potentially leading to further delays in certifications. Election law expert David Becker suggested these changes might allow one county to refuse certification and thus postpone statewide results past deadlines.

In response, Ken Cuccinelli from the Election Transparency Initiative clarified on social media that these rules do not alter any timelines for certification but instead provide necessary clarity regarding processes involved. He likened following legal protocols during certifications to ensuring passenger counts match ticket scans for flights—both are crucial for maintaining integrity.

The new regulations explicitly maintain a 5:00 p.m. deadline for certifications on the Monday following elections; Cobb County GOP Chairwoman Salleigh Grubbs noted there is nothing within them indicating any potential delays if read correctly.

Critics like CNN lamented provisions allowing county officials to investigate discrepancies before certifying results—such as instances where more ballots were cast than voters recorded—which could lead backtracking similar issues seen during previous elections like Fulton County’s double-scanning incident in 2020.

Brianna Lyman serves as an elections correspondent at The Federalist and holds a degree from Fordham University in International Political Economy; her work has appeared across various news platforms including Newsmax and Fox News

https://thefederalist.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot-2024-08-30-at-3.33.43-PM-e1725046526921-1024x577.png
[7380,25952,6571,4188,5565
post-2335518","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-misinformation","tag-certification","tag-elections","tag-media","tag-regulations
https://thefederalist.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot-2024-08-30-at-3.33.43-PM-e1725046526921-1024x577.png
["GET
