Footage from the Philippine coast guard captures the incident occurring in the contested Sabina Shoal region. In one moment, it seems that a Chinese ship intentionally cut off a Philippine vessel. Both parties quickly accused each other of responsibility for the collision. Liu Dejun, a spokesperson for the Chinese coast guard, claimed that the Philippine ship was “illegally anchored” in the area and was “provoking and causing trouble.” Conversely, Jay Tarriella, a spokesperson for the Philippine coast guard, stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the Chinese vessel “deliberately rammed and collided” with their ship without any provocation. U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller criticized China’s actions as “dangerous and escalatory,” noting this incident as part of a pattern of aggressive behavior by China throughout August 2024 that has disrupted lawful operations by Philippines in South China Sea waters including Sabina Shoal. He emphasized that China’s claims to territorial sovereignty over areas lacking land threaten navigation freedoms for all nations. The Sabina Shoal is located approximately 87 miles west of Palawan island in the Philippines and about 746 miles from mainland China, according to Al Jazeera reports. In May, officials from the Philippines indicated that China had begun constructing “large man-made islands” near Sabina Shoal based on evidence of crushed coral deposits; however, these efforts were reportedly thwarted by Philippine patrols.
