These eight-legged creatures are appearing in various states as they enter their mating season, leading to alerts for eight specific states. Although tarantulas are typically found in the Southwest, other regions will also experience an influx of these spiders. The timing of mating seasons can differ based on species, location, climate, and other factors, but most occur during the fall. According to BBC’s Science Focus, this annual mating ritual is particularly noticeable in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Lauren Davidson from the Houston Museum of Natural Science explained to BBC that male tarantulas venture out looking for mates while females remain hidden in their burrows and release pheromones to attract them. If someone spots a wandering tarantula during this time of year, it is likely a male seeking a female’s burrow. Males emerge when environmental conditions are favorable; thus their appearance varies by region.

When males locate a female’s burrow, they will “knock” before attempting to mate. However, this polite gesture does not guarantee survival; females may eat slower males if they cannot escape quickly enough. For male tarantulas, mating can be more perilous than romantic—especially if the female successfully captures him with her fangs and injects venom.

Newsweek reported that one species—the Texas brown tarantula—is expected to emerge across its extensive range from late August through October. Residents in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas Missouri Texas and Louisiana might encounter these spiders which are generally described as “shy and docile.” They typically only bite humans when threatened or provoked.

Andrine Shufran from Oklahoma State University’s Insect Adventure noted that while tarantulas can bite if feeling threatened—they usually prefer fleeing instead. When cornered without options left they may stand on their hind legs displaying their fangs—a behavior often leading both spider and human to retreat unharmed.

Additionally troubling are small hairs on the bodies of tarantulas which can detach when disturbed; these hairs may be carried by wind causing skin irritation upon contact. Shufran explained that when agitated these spiders rub their back legs against those hairs creating what resembles a protective barrier—these airborne hairs can cause significant itching for both people and animals alike

[33651
39859,39857,39860,39858,19919
post-2335196","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-state-warnings","tag-tarantulas","tag-us-nature","tag-weather-alerts","tag-wildlife
["GET
