On August 21, the town’s Board of Health instituted a curfew prohibiting outdoor activities after 6 p.m., as reported by CBS. This decision was made following an incident where a resident contracted Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Health officials believe that this curfew will help keep people indoors during times when mosquito activity is highest.

However, parent Sarah Fournier expressed concern that one case does not justify such extreme measures: “The numbers don’t warrant the drastic actions they’re trying to implement.” Josh Ziemsk, Vice President of Oxford Webster Football and Cheer, echoed her sentiments, stating that parents should be allowed to make their own decisions regarding safety and precautions.

Bobby Poirier, president of the Oxford-Webster Youth Football and Cheer Association, argued against penalizing children who have already faced challenges due to COVID-19. He warned that enforcing this curfew could effectively end their entire season since it would restrict access to fields for practice and games. Poirier also voiced skepticism about whether the town would honor its commitment not to remove teams from fields if liability waivers were signed.

Philip Davis, president of Oxford Little League, recalled how similar restrictions in 2019 had negative effects on children’s well-being: “We saw what happened when we kept kids indoors; it was detrimental.” Town officials clarified that while there is no outright ban on outdoor activities after 6 p.m., school-related events will need to conclude by then.

Rike Sterrett, public health director for the town, emphasized that protecting public health is paramount given the presence of EEE in Oxford: “It’s a serious illness; we want to prevent anyone else from getting sick.” The affected resident is reportedly in his 80s and bravely fighting off the virus; this case marks Massachusetts’ first instance since 2020.
