But we were all working on one film together. After all, had the movie pushed woke or anti-Trump themes, then we know Cannes audiences would have praised it.

Above all, Coppola’s new film seems to acknowledge that American moviegoers find wokeness repellent.

In 2023, for instance, some of Hollywood’s worst big-budget flops featured race- and sex-related overtones that paying customers have rejected.

Furthermore, whether or not “Megalopolis” succeeds at the box office, Coppola’s mere words have struck an important blow against wokeness.

Meanwhile, Coppola also tacitly acknowledged the very small step from the woke pastime of “lecturing viewers” to the diabolical practice of canceling dissenters altogether. The former temptation involves pride, which springs from a belief in our own moral goodness. The latter — a deadlier manifestation of the same sin — has totalitarian dimensions.

Thus, armed with awareness of my own unfortunate temptations to pride, determined to avoid the sin of sanctimonious moral preening, and grateful that a famous Hollywood director has actively tried to exclude these things from his new film, I will look forward to seeing “Megalopolis” on the big screen.

* Name

*

* Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

     function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! This pride can lead us to see ourselves as morally superior to others, and we often recognize and appreciate this same attitude in those around us. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, renowned filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, famous for classics like “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now,” expressed his desire for his upcoming film “Megalopolis” not to be perceived as just another preachy Hollywood project. This perspective is refreshing. Similar to the new political partnership between former President Donald Trump and ex-Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Coppola’s film boasts a cast that emphasizes unity despite differing views.

Interviewer David Fear pointed out an intriguing casting decision: “You cast Jon Voight in a role that closely resembles Donald Trump, and I suspect there are some political beliefs he holds that you don’t,” he remarked. Voight is one of the few notable conservatives in Hollywood who supports Trump, stating in a video on X (formerly Twitter) that “We must vote for President Trump because he will save this nation.”

Coppola elaborated on his courageous choice to avoid Hollywood’s trendiness: “I didn’t want our film labeled as just another woke production lecturing its audience. The cast includes individuals who have faced cancellation at various points.” He highlighted the diversity within the group: “There were staunch conservatives alongside extremely progressive individuals working together on one project; I found that fascinating.” “Megalopolis” is set for release on September 27 and is described by Coppola as an epic reflecting modern America through the lens of the Roman Empire.

Fear characterized it as an ambitious narrative about a decaying republic filled with corrupt politicians and hedonists, featuring a character reminiscent of a recent former president—played by none other than Jon Voight. Given Voight’s involvement along with Coppola’s intention against wokeness, audiences may feel reassured that this portrayal won’t simply be a caricature of Trump.

Fear noted that “Megalopolis” was deemed “the most divisive film” at Cannes when it premiered earlier this year—a sign suggesting it might not align with typical woke or anti-Trump narratives praised by festival-goers. This indicates awareness among American moviegoers regarding their aversion to wokeness; many major Hollywood films released in 2023 failed due to themes related to race or gender issues rejected by audiences.

Regardless of its box office performance, Coppola’s statements represent an important stand against wokeness in cinema today. He also subtly acknowledged how easily lecturing viewers can transition into outright canceling dissenters—a dangerous path stemming from pride rooted in self-righteousness which can take totalitarian forms.

With recognition of my own struggles against prideful tendencies and appreciation for Coppola’s efforts to keep these elements out of his work, I eagerly anticipate watching “Megalopolis” on the big screen

[33651
39779,39780,15244,4361,36456
post-2334451","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-coppola","tag-filmmaking","tag-godfather","tag-hollywood","tag-woke-culture
["GET
