This amendment allows local authorities to require identification from voters in municipal elections and is set to take effect in 2026. However, as noted by Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates, Min’s introduction of SB 1174 indicates that Bonta’s assertions lack validity: “If passing voter ID laws was illegal, why was a new bill necessary?” Gates stated.

When asked if Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom would sign SB 1174 into law, Newsom Communications Director Izzy Gardon told The Federalist that it would be assessed based on its merits and mentioned that there is a deadline of September 30th for signing or vetoing legislation on the Governor’s desk.

The legal actions taken by California Democrats against Huntington Beach align with broader leftist efforts nationwide aimed at discrediting widely supported election security measures like voter ID laws. Democrats often claim these regulations suppress votes from non-white individuals; however, multiple court rulings have found no evidence supporting such claims.

Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and holds a degree from the University of Mary Washington.
