This decision was announced by Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for⁢ foreign affairs,‌ during a recent meeting with foreign ministers from EU member states in Brussels. The election, which took place over a month ago, ⁢resulted in Maduro‌ being declared the winner, despite claims from the opposition that they had evidence showing⁣ their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, actually won. Borrell emphasized that, while Maduro may hold the presidency‌ in practice, the results of the election lack verification and thus cannot be deemed legitimate. The Venezuelan electoral authority, loyal ⁢to Maduro, failed to publish complete voting results, raising⁢ concerns over the credibility of the electoral ⁣process.

EU announces it will not recognize ‘legitimacy’ of Venezuelan president

Foreign ministers in the European Union announced on Thursday they would not recognize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s “democratic legitimacy.”

The decision comes slightly over a month after Venezuela’s controversial presidential election, in which Maduro was declared the winner, even though the opposition candidate provided some evidence suggesting the country’s president was actually defeated.

“We cannot accept the legitimacy of Maduro as elected president,” said Josep Borrell, EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy and vice president of the European Commission. “He will remain president, de facto. … But we deny democratic legitimacy based on a result that cannot be verified.”

Borrell’s statement came after a meeting in Brussels, Belgium, with foreign ministers from the EU’s 27 members, Reuters reported. This announcement was made on Thursday, just over a month after Venezuela’s disputed presidential election, where Maduro was proclaimed the victor despite evidence from the opposition suggesting he actually lost. Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, stated, “We cannot accept Maduro’s legitimacy as an elected president.” He noted that while Maduro will continue to hold power de facto, they reject his democratic legitimacy due to unverifiable election results. This decision followed a meeting in Brussels with foreign ministers from all 27 EU member states. Borrell explained that officials within Maduro’s regime failed to provide credible evidence supporting his victory in July’s election. The National Electoral Council of Venezuela, which is aligned with Maduro’s government, announced him as the winner without releasing complete voting figures. In contrast, Maria Corina Machado’s opposition party claimed their candidate Edmundo Gonzalez won by a significant margin and has since been involved in protests against Maduro while evading police persecution. Reports indicate nearly 1,800 individuals have been arrested during demonstrations against Maduro and are considered political prisoners. Despite the EU’s condemnation of Maduro’s regime and its refusal to recognize his electoral victory as legitimate, this stance is unlikely to significantly affect Venezuela or facilitate Gonzalez’s rise to presidency; Borrell acknowledged this reality but emphasized that their action sends a “strong statement” and serves as an important initial step

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/venezuela-election-protest-july-2024.webp
[538
39748,33556,5894,14099
post-2334212","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-washington-examiner","tag-eu","tag-legitimacy","tag-politics","tag-venezuela
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/venezuela-election-protest-july-2024.webp
["GET
