Democrats hold 36 of the 100 Iowa House seats, which is the Democratic Party&rsquo;s smallest contingent in the lower chamber for more than 55 years, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleedingheartland.com\/2024\/08\/26\/democrats-guaranteed-to-pick-up-one-iowa-house-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Bleeding Heartland<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Republican State Rep. Luana Stoltenberg won the open seat by just 11 votes following<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleedingheartland.com\/2022\/12\/09\/iowa-house-race-exposes-problems-with-scott-countys-ballot-count\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> a controversial series of recounts<\/a>. Earlier this year, she announced she would not be seeking reelection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It has been an honor to serve the people of District 81 and the state of Iowa,&rdquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/legislators\/legislator?ga=90&amp;personID=33989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> Stoltenberg<\/a> said in her resignation. &ldquo;I am grateful for the opportunity and have enjoyed my time in the Statehouse immensely.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3074285\/iowa-senate-majority-whip-resigns-after-primary-win\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Iowa Republicans<\/a> couldn&rsquo;t recruit anyone to take her place. There were no independent or third<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-mexico-congressional-election-poses-early-test-for-democrats\/\" title=\"New Mexico Congressional Election Poses Early Test for Democrats\">-party candidates<\/a> who filed their candidacy before the Aug. 24 filing deadline either.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden received 53.4% of the vote in what is now part of Iowa House District 81, while former President Donald Trump received 44.5% of the vote during the 2020 election.
