Greg Abbott announced this week.

And some who might have voted illegally have been referred for prosecution.

In a news release on Monday, Abbott declared that the second largest number of names — 457,000 — have been removed for what’s probably the best reason possible: They are deceased.

The largest number of names — 463,000 — have been removed because they were on a “suspense list,” meaning they haven’t confirmed a residential address in the state, according to Fox News.

The remaining names were removed for a variety of reasons, including, most troubling, as belonging to those suspected of being non-citizens.

“Illegal voting in Texas will never be tolerated,” Abbott said in Monday’s announcement. “We will continue to actively safeguard Texans’ sacred right to vote while also aggressively protecting our elections from illegal voting.”

Now, that shouldn’t be a controversial statement. Protecting elections from illegal votes is as important as safeguarding the right to vote for every American who chooses to exercise it.

That doesn’t mean the government can go off half-cocked, of course. The liberal-leaning Texas Tribune greeted Abbott’s announcement by reprising a scandal from 2019 in which the Texas Secretary of State’s Office erroneously identified a jaw-dropping 95,000 “non-citizens” as being on the state voting rolls.

In actuality, tens of thousands of those “non-citizens” had become naturalized citizens, and the secretary of state’s office was using old information, the Tribune reported in February 2019.

That scandal resulted in the May 2019 resignation of then-Secretary of State David Whitley, as The Houston Chronicle reported at the time.

But past misfires can’t preclude officials in the present from doing their duty — and the fact of that matter is that the number of non-citizens voting in American elections should be zero.

Even one vote cast illegally dilutes the power of votes cast legally, essentially depriving American citizens of their right to control their own government.

While the numbers Abbott released on Monday include potential non-citizens, the overwhelming majority involve undeniably suspect names — the dead and those whose addresses are not confirmed.

Being dead, of course, invalidates any claim on the democratic process (even if some Democrats don’t agree). But just being alive doesn’t guarantee it either. Voter address registration is key to ensuring not only that votes are cast legally, but also that votes are cast only once.

“Election integrity is essential to our democracy,” Abbott said in Monday’s announcement. “I have signed the <a href="https://www.conservativenewsdaily.net/breaking-news/one-of-the-strongest-election-laws-in-the-country-missouri-gov-reforms-election-laws-banning-mail-in-ballots-requiring-voter-id/" title="“One Of The Strongest Election Laws In The Country”: Missouri Gov. Additionally, some individuals suspected of voting illegally have been referred for prosecution. In a press release on Monday, Abbott stated that the second-largest group of names—457,000—was removed because they are deceased. The largest group—463,000—was taken off due to being on a “suspense list,” indicating they had not verified their residential address in the state, according to Fox News.

The remaining names were purged for various reasons, including concerns about non-citizenship. “Illegal voting in Texas will never be tolerated,” Abbott asserted in his announcement on Monday. “We will continue to actively safeguard Texans’ sacred right to vote while also aggressively protecting our elections from illegal voting.” This statement should not be controversial; ensuring elections are free from illegal votes is just as crucial as protecting every American’s right to vote.

However, it’s important that government actions are well-founded and not hasty. The liberal-leaning Texas Tribune responded to Abbott’s announcement by recalling a scandal from 2019 when the Texas Secretary of State’s Office mistakenly identified an astonishing 95,000 “non-citizens” on the state’s voter rolls. In reality, many of those labeled as “non-citizens” had become naturalized citizens and were based on outdated information used by the secretary of state’s office.

This error led to then-Secretary of State David Whitley resigning in May 2019 due to public outcry over these inaccuracies. Nevertheless, past mistakes should not prevent current officials from fulfilling their responsibilities; it is essential that non-citizen participation in U.S. elections remains at zero.

Even one illegal vote undermines legitimate votes and infringes upon American citizens’ rights to govern themselves effectively. While Abbott’s figures include potential non-citizens among those purged from voter rolls this week, most involve clearly invalid entries such as deceased individuals or those without confirmed addresses.

Being deceased disqualifies any claim within democratic processes (even if some may disagree). However, simply being alive does not guarantee eligibility either; confirming voter registration addresses is vital for ensuring votes are cast legally and only once.

“Election integrity is essential to our democracy,” Abbott emphasized during his announcement on Monday. He noted that he has enacted some of the strongest election laws nationwide aimed at safeguarding voting rights while cracking down on illegal activities at polling places.

In 2021 he signed S.B. 1 into law—a measure designed specifically for maintaining electoral integrity—which became notable when Texas Democrats attempted evasive tactics against its passage that year.
Abbott highlighted how these reforms have resulted in removing over one million unauthorized individuals—including noncitizens—from voter rolls within three years: “The Secretary of State and county registrars must continually review these lists and remove anyone deemed unqualified while referring potential cases of illegal voting for investigation.”

With just 68 days until presidential elections occur nationally—the situation unfolding in Texas deserves widespread attention across America.
While historically Republican-dominated—the commitment towards maintaining accurate electoral records should transcend party lines.
Other states ought also consider adopting similar measures like those seen recently implemented throughout Texan governance efforts regarding election oversight practices

[32644,38778,3694,39534,32643
post-2332518","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-election-integrity","tag-election-laws","tag-texas","tag-voter-purge","tag-voter-rolls
["GET
