However, it also served as a sneak peek into what a potential primary in 2028 might look like if Harris were to lose to former President Donald Trump this November. Prominent Democratic figures, previously viewed as potential successors to President Joe Biden, rallied around Harris during the convention, enhancing their own national visibility without overshadowing her.

Governors Andy Beshear (D-KY), Roy Cooper (D-NC), Wes Moore (D-MD), J.B. Pritzker (D-IL), Josh Shapiro (D-PA), and Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) joined Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) in delivering key speeches that introduced or reintroduced themselves to the public. Pritzker, who hosted the convention, had Illinois Democratic Party Chairwoman Lisa Hernandez introduce him during the ceremonial roll call before he cast his state’s electoral votes for Harris. Their speeches not only defended a potential Harris presidency against another Trump administration but also highlighted their own backgrounds.

Moore referenced his quick response to a recent infrastructure crisis: “While many said it could take 11 months to reopen the Port of Baltimore, we got it done in 11 weeks,” he stated about this spring’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. None of these addresses matched former President Barack Obama’s memorable speech at his first convention in Boston in 2004—a fortunate outcome for Harris as she seeks to reshape the Democratic Party just two months before Election Day.

Throughout the week of the convention, several members of her team of rivals engaged with state delegations and media on her behalf while participating actively with supporters—an energetic contrast compared to last month’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Buttigieg appeared at events alongside Beshear—who was considered for Harris’s running mate—and expressed enthusiasm about campaigning together: “This election is critical. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will lead us forward, not backwards.”

Shapiro from Pennsylvania emphasized his commitment despite being overlooked for vice president: “I’m looking forward to spending a lot of time with them over the next…80 or so days.” He noted that Democrats have experienced unprecedented energy leading up to this election after Biden stepped down and allowed Harris’s candidacy.

In contrast with Trump’s reluctance to involve former opponents like Nikki Haley—who has endorsed him but stayed off campaign trails—the governors’ support for Harris stood out prominently. Notably absent from prime-time speaking slots was Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA), seen as one of her main competitors; however, he did nominate her during roll call alongside Nancy Pelosi.

Newsom stirred some controversy by expressing dissatisfaction regarding how things unfolded within their party process during an interview at the convention: “We went through a very open process… It was bottom-up; I don’t know if you know that,” he remarked ambiguously.

Despite speculation about tensions between Newsom and Harris due to his lack of speaking time, Democrats dismissed such claims; Rep.
