But officials are warning U.S. doctors to be on the lookout for the infection in travelers coming from Cuba and South America.

Oropouche is a virus that is native to forested tropical areas. It was first identified in 1955 in a 24-year-old forest worker on the island of Trinidad, and was named for a nearby village and wetlands.

It has sometimes been called sloth fever because scientists first investigating the virus found it in a three-toed sloth, and believed sloths were important in its spread between insects and animals.

The virus is spread to humans by small biting flies called midges, and by some types of mosquitoes. Humans have become infected while visiting forested areas and are believed to be responsible for helping the virus make its way to towns and cities, but person-to-person transmission has not been documented.

Beginning late last year, the virus was identified as the cause of large outbreaks in Amazon regions where it was known to exist, as well as in new areas in South America and the Caribbean. About 8,000 locally acquired cases have been reported in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, and Peru.

Some travelers have been diagnosed with it in the U.S. and Europe. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday said 21 U.S. cases have been reported so far — 20 in Florida and one in New York — all of whom had been in Cuba. European health officials previously said they had found 19 cases, nearly all among travelers.

Symptoms can seem similar to other tropical diseases like dengue, Zika or malaria. Fever, headaches and muscle aches are common, and some infected people also suffer diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or rash.

Some patients suffer recurring symptoms, and 1 in 20 can suffer more severe symptoms like bleeding, meningitis and encephalitis. It is rarely fatal, though there are recent reports of deaths in two healthy young people in Brazil.

There are no vaccines to prevent infections and no medicines available to treat the symptoms.

In Brazil, officials are investigating reports that infections might be passed on from a pregnant woman to a fetus — a potentially frightening echo of what was seen during Zika outbreaks nearly a decade ago.

The CDC has recommended that pregnant women avoid non-essential travel to Cuba and suggested all travelers take steps to prevent bug bites, such as using insect repellents and wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

The Western Journal has reviewed this Associated Press story and may have altered it prior to publication to ensure that it meets our editorial standards.

* Name

*

* Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

     function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! All cases are linked to Oropouche virus disease, commonly referred to as sloth fever. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities, and there is currently no indication of the virus spreading within the United States. However, health officials are advising U.S. doctors to be vigilant for this infection in travelers arriving from Cuba and South America.

Oropouche is a virus endemic to tropical forest regions and was first discovered in 1955 in a 24-year-old forest worker on Trinidad Island; it was named after a nearby village and wetland area. The nickname “sloth fever” originated because researchers initially found the virus in three-toed sloths and believed these animals played a role in its transmission between insects and other wildlife.

The virus is transmitted to humans primarily through small biting flies known as midges, as well as certain mosquito species. Infections typically occur when people visit forested areas; while they may contribute to spreading the virus into urban areas, human-to-human transmission has not been documented.

Since late last year, Oropouche has been identified as responsible for significant outbreaks in Amazon regions where it was already known and also in new locations across South America and the Caribbean. Approximately 8,000 locally acquired cases have been reported across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, and Peru; some travelers have also tested positive for it upon returning to the U.S. or Europe.

As of Tuesday’s report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 21 confirmed cases in the U.S.—20 located in Florida and one in New York—all linked back to travel history involving Cuba. European health authorities previously reported nearly 19 cases among travelers.

Symptoms of Oropouche can resemble those of other tropical diseases such as dengue fever or Zika virus infection—common symptoms include fever along with headaches and muscle pain; some patients may experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or rashes too. While most recover without severe complications—1 out of every 20 infected individuals may develop more serious symptoms like bleeding or neurological issues such as meningitis or encephalitis—the illness is rarely fatal despite recent reports indicating two deaths among otherwise healthy young adults in Brazil.

Currently, there are no vaccines available for prevention nor specific treatments for managing symptoms associated with this infection. Brazilian health officials are investigating potential transmission routes from pregnant women to their fetuses—a concerning parallel reminiscent of past Zika outbreaks nearly ten years ago.

The CDC advises pregnant women against non-essential travel to Cuba while recommending that all travelers take precautions against insect bites by using repellents along with wearing long-sleeved clothing

https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/8d262cd24b4f4451a7810fcfd8301978-scaled.jpg
[39466,39465,39464
post-2332042","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-health-information","tag-infectious-diseases","tag-oropouche-virus
https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/8d262cd24b4f4451a7810fcfd8301978-scaled.jpg
["GET
