During this time, former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt while campaigning in the state. According to an Axios report, Republicans registered 19,127 new voters compared to 17,495 for Democrats. The incident occurred on July 13 during a rally in Butler County when a gunman opened fire on Trump. Instead of dampening enthusiasm for his campaign, Pennsylvania Republicans rallied around their leader with renewed energy. Ed Sheppard, communications chair for the Doylestown Republican Committee, remarked that Trump’s resilience inspired many Republicans to intensify their support.

Both Trump’s and Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaigns are actively working to boost voter turnout in Pennsylvania—a key state for presidential elections. This recent surge in Republican registrations is not an isolated event; from November 2023 to April 2024, there was a consistent increase in new Republican voters while Democratic registrations declined according to NOTUS data. Although Democrats still maintain a lead of about 400,000 registered voters statewide—down from over one million more than Republicans a decade ago—the competition remains fierce after President Joe Biden’s narrow victory by approximately 80,000 votes four years ago.

State Sen. State Rep. Gina Curry expressed worries about maintaining Black voter support amid indications that Trump may be gaining traction with this group compared to previous Republican candidates.
