A quibble about whether we have 1,500 or slightly less than 1,500 \u2014 but we have way more than 1400 now \u2014 prosecutions. We have a substantial number of convictions,\u201d Garland boasted.<\/p>\n<figure>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AG Garland Responds To Transfer Of Power Concerns: The DOJ \u2018Will Continue To Protect Our Democracy\u2019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zoCw1RNk8qY?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s shown to everybody how seriously we take an effort to interfere with the peaceful transfer of power the last January 6, the coming January 6, and every January 6 after that,\u201d he continued. \u201cI want to make clear to anybody who is thinking about interfering with that: They can see what we\u2019ve done with respect to the January 6 prosecutions, and [the] Justice Department will continue to protect our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Director at Big Data Poll Richard Baris <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Peoples_Pundit\/status\/1827906019114050037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a> in a post on X why Garland\u2019s comments are so alarming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what 50% of the country heard from Garland. \u2018We\u2019re gonna steal this election and if you try to fight us, we\u2019ll put you in prison.\u2019 God this country is totally corrupt,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDOJ prosecutors and DC judges are warning that the hammer will come down on any American who protests the 2024 election results,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/julie_kelly2\/status\/1827801112176476565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">echoed<\/a> independent journalist Julie Kelly on X after Garland made his press conference statement. \u201cThey treat J6ers like mass murderers,\u201d she continued, citing comments from Obama-appointed District Judge Tanya Chutkan \u201clecturing a J6 protestor convicted of a misdemeanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ brought the \u201chammer\u201d down in the wake of the 2020 election, as Garland made clear. The DOJ charged hundreds of protesters \u2014 including a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/16\/j6-praying-grandma-slammed-with-six-figure-fine-and-probation-for-walking-around-capitol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praying grandma<\/a>\u201d in her 70s \u2014 under a federal statute that the Supreme Court later <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/28\/supreme-court-tosses-obstruction-charges-for-j6-defendants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a> was used in an over-broad capacity.<\/p>\n<p>But American skepticism about our electoral processes, in part, stems from the actions the DOJ has taken, starting with their attempt to criminalize election-related speech.<\/p>\n<p>Under Garland\u2019s watch, the DOJ targeted former President Donald Trump for his speech on Jan. 6 in which he told his supporters who wanted to protest the election to do so \u201cpeacefully and patriotically.\u201d As my colleague Matt Kittle <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/04\/bidens-real-legacy-will-be-as-silencer-of-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>, those words \u201cbecame the impetus for charges of \u2018insurrection\u2019 and \u2018election interference.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garland has also sought to undermine attempts to secure elections, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/04\/biden-department-of-justice-declares-war-on-voter-id-and-other-election-security-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vowing<\/a> in March to fight \u201cburdensome\u201d and \u201cunnecessary\u201d election security laws like voter ID requirements despite a Pew Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2024\/02\/07\/bipartisan-support-for-early-in-person-voting-voter-id-election-day-national-holiday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> finding 81 percent of Americans support requiring people to show a \u201c<a title=\"Dems Demand ID To Get Into Their Convention But Not To Vote\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-demand-id-to-get-into-their-convention-but-not-to-vote\/\">government-issued photo identification&amp;rdquo<\/a>; in order to vote.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, the DOJ asked the Supreme Court to \u201cdeny\u201d Republicans\u2019 bid \u201cto enforce an Arizona law requiring individuals to prove they\u2019re U.S. citizens when registering and voting in elections,\u201d as my colleague Shawn Fleetwood <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/20\/biden-doj-asks-scotus-to-squash-arizonas-proof-of-citizenship-voter-requirements-for-2024-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>. Currently, voters simply need to check a box on a federal registration form affirming they are a citizen. In a nation overrun with millions of illegal immigrants, we\u2019re relying on the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/13\/without-the-save-act-the-only-thing-keeping-foreigners-from-voting-is-the-honor-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">honor system<\/a> to register voters.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just the DOJ\u2019s actions that have led Americans to feel increasing distrust toward election administration.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington, D.C. bar <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/01\/d-c-bar-recommends-punishing-trump-doj-lawyer-jeff-clark-for-unsent-letter-about-georgia-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommended<\/a> that Trump-era DOJ official Jeffrey Clark be suspended for at least two years because he <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/02\/obama-judge-rejects-removal-of-fulton-county-case-to-federal-court-where-jeff-clark-could-get-a-fair-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drafted<\/a> a letter to Georgia officials in which he said the DOJ \u201cidentified significant concerns that may have impacted the outcome of the [2020] election in multiple States, including the State of Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the 2020 election in Georgia was certified, though the State Election Board <a href=\"https:\/\/georgiarecorder.com\/2024\/05\/07\/georgia-oversight-panel-ruminates-on-2020-election-hiccups-as-2024-showdowns-loom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed<\/a> a motion this past May <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/politics\/georgia-election-board-reprimands-fulton-for-double-scanned-ballots-in-2020\/G3H27SUHGFDRHAOZSG4JQJ2F7E\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finding<\/a> Fulton County double-scanned 3,075 ballots. The board did not issue a rule on the 17,852 votes that were, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/21\/ga-attorney-general-says-his-office-wont-investigate-fulton-county-over-its-illegal-2020-conduct\/\">complaint<\/a> filed by Kevin Moncla and Joseph Rossi, <a title=\"GA AG Says He Won't Investigate Fulton County's Illegal Conduct\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ga-ag-says-he-wont-investigate-fulton-countys-illegal-conduct\/\">allegedly missing ballot images<\/a> in the county.<\/p>\n<p>Election meddler Marc Elias, who was recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/19\/kamala-campaign-hires-notorious-election-meddler-to-serve-as-legal-counsel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hired<\/a> by Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 presidential campaign, also recently warned in a post on X that questioning election administration could land you in court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere is my message to the GOP: If you try to subvert the election in 2024, you will be sued and you will lose,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<figure>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\n<p>In 2020, Trump tried to overturn the election. My team and I beat him in court 60+ times.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Republicans in several counties refused to certify. Ten days later, the Democrat Party of Georgia sent a letter to the entire Fulton County board warning that, should board members not certify election results, they could face criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p>Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar and Attorney General Aaron D. Ford filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvsos.gov\/sos\/Home\/Components\/News\/News\/3504\/309?backlist=%2fsos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">petition<\/a> in July with the state Supreme Court to force Washoe County to certify the results of two <a title=\"Dems Threaten GOP Officials Into Certifying Elections Or Else\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-threaten-gop-officials-into-certifying-elections-or-else\/\">recount primary races<\/a>. Three board members initially chose not to certify the results over allegations of suspicious behavior made during a public comment portion of a board meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The state Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-certification-nevada-supreme-court-washoe-county-eb6e82cb4bf25c5c8cc1a32bf7d6f986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismissed<\/a> the petition as \u201cmoot,\u201d though it did signal a similar challenge could be brought by the state should an election not be certified this election cycle.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
