Dickens told the Washington Examiner at a Georgia delegation breakfast. “She’s got the polls to prove it and the energy right here at this convention is definitely saying this is gonna be our next president.”

New York delegate Tonya Lewis Taylor, executive director of the I Will Graduate youth development program in New York City, was similarly adamant regarding Harris, underscoring the importance of confidence.

“We’re never underdogs,” Sanchez told the Washington Examiner. “As a woman, as a woman of color, as a woman that is black and Indian … But Barnes simultaneously insisted she and her colleagues are “working in some tough territory.”

“We’re making sure we’re talking to voters who maybe voted for Obama and then went away from the party for a minute and now we’re bringing them back,” Barnes told the Washington Examiner at a Michigan breakfast. “They’re coming back, but it’s work to make sure they’re coming back. If you don’t run as the underdog, if you get complacent and comfortable, that’s how you lose.”

But there are advantages to being an underdog, according to Michigan delegate Bobby Christian, who ran for Detroit-based Wayne County commissioner this year.

“The underdog story, everybody loves it, because the majority of us in America, we’re underdogs, so we believe in that story. That’s gonna be one of her stronger suits,” Christian told the Washington Examiner at an earlier Great Lakes State breakfast. “Sometimes being too confident can come off real cocky and negative, so you always just want to, you want to be even-keeled and you want to relate to everybody you can. But the underdog, everybody relates to.”

Georgia DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston quipped that Harris being the underdog “is the best place” for a politician to be.

“It means that she wants, she’s not going to take anything for granted and it also means she wants everyone out here not to take it for granted,” Boston told the Washington Examiner at the same Georgia breakfast attended by the Atlanta mayor. “We have to keep on working all the way up until the polls close on Election Day. However, following her consistently strong polling and fundraising results, party members at last week’s national convention in Chicago are starting to view her as a leading contender against former President Donald Trump—a significant shift from their outlook just a month ago when President Joe Biden was still in the race. For instance, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens noted that with Georgia back on the Democratic electoral map after Biden suspended his campaign, Harris is now seen as the frontrunner against Trump with about 70 days until November. “She may have started as an underdog due to name recognition transitioning from Biden to her, but now she’s leading,” Dickens told the Washington Examiner during a breakfast for Georgia delegates. “The polls support this, and there’s definitely an energy here suggesting she could be our next president.”

New York delegate Tonya Lewis Taylor echoed this sentiment by emphasizing confidence over underdog status. “We’re never underdogs,” said Taylor, who also works as a gospel recording artist. “We must run our race believing we can achieve our goals; therefore I wouldn’t label her as such.” New York City Council Member Pierina Ana Sanchez acknowledged Harris’s political experience but expressed caution regarding potential challenges related to her race and gender—similar issues faced by Barack Obama in 2008 and Hillary Clinton in 2016. “While we don’t see or believe she is an underdog,” Sanchez stated, “she needs to connect with voters everywhere.” She highlighted that racism and sexism remain prevalent issues that could pose obstacles for Harris.

Sanchez’s concerns reflect heightened awareness among Democrats following their overconfidence during Clinton’s candidacy in 2016 when they underestimated Trump’s chances—ultimately losing key states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin by narrow margins. Maryland delegate Sharonda Huffman agreed that while national polls show Harris leading Trump by about two percentage points on average, success hinges on swing states: “She is indeed the underdog,” Huffman remarked at a Maryland breakfast meeting.

In Michigan specifically—where recent averages show Harris holding a two-point lead over Trump—the state’s Democratic Party Chairwoman Lavora Barnes expressed confidence in their ground game coordinated with the Harris campaign but acknowledged they are operating within challenging territory: “We’re reaching out to voters who may have strayed from us after voting for Obama,” Barnes explained.

Despite these challenges of being perceived as an underdog—which some see positively—Michigan delegate Bobby Christian pointed out its appeal: “Everyone loves an underdog story because most Americans relate to it.” He emphasized maintaining humility rather than appearing overly confident.

DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston added that being viewed as an underdog can be advantageous since it encourages hard work without taking anything for granted: “It means she wants everyone engaged until Election Day.”

The Harris campaign has pushed back against labeling her solely as a front-runner; aides prefer highlighting their fundraising achievements of $82 million along with substantial volunteer engagement during convention week.
