However, a significant number of voters remain undecided in this highly scrutinized election. The High Point University/SurveyUSA poll revealed that 48% of respondents support Stein, while 34% back Robinson, with 18% indicating they are undecided. Conducted from August 19 to August 21 among 1,053 registered voters, the poll highlights the competitive nature of this race.

The gubernatorial contest serves as a measure of political influence in North Carolina, which has a closely divided electorate and an influx of new candidates. If elected, Robinson would become the state’s first Black governor; if Stein wins, he would be North Carolina’s first Jewish governor. Currently serving as lieutenant governor, Robinson gained attention in 2018 for his pro-gun rights comments and has since received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

Despite this endorsement, data from AdImpact shows that approximately three-quarters of nearly $78 million spent or allocated for the gubernatorial campaign has been directed towards Stein. In fundraising efforts during the second quarter of this year, Stein raised $13.8 million compared to Robinson’s $5.1 million. In a recent fundraising appeal to supporters, Robinson warned that without changes in fundraising efforts, both his campaign and potentially Trump’s chances could be jeopardized.

Robinson has moderated his stance on abortion recently; after previously advocating for a total ban with no exceptions (later adjusting it to support a six-week ban), he now endorses North Carolina’s existing law prohibiting abortions after 12 weeks—an issue he described as personal due to his wife’s past experience with abortion.

Political analyst Michael Bitzer noted that if Robinson continues to underperform relative to expectations compared to Trump’s candidacy in North Carolina it could pose challenges for both campaigns. Other polls conducted in August by sources like The New York Times and the Carolina Journal also show Stein leading outside the margin of error; RealClearPolitics averages indicate an overall lead for him at about 8.7%.
