This lesson was ⁣brought to light by Colorado state Representative Brandi Bradley, whose 15-year-old son was in the class. She expressed her outrage on social media, stating that parents should be concerned about such teachings not aligning with their values. The teacher defended the lesson, indicating that it was⁢ part of a discussion on the‌ self-expression of artists during the Renaissance and that the content was approved by the county. Bradley⁤ questioned the appropriateness of exposing her child to ideas of‍ gender fluidity⁢ in a school setting, emphasizing‌ her conservative beliefs and suggesting that such theories should⁤ not be taught to impressionable teenagers⁢ without clear evidence. However, in a Colorado school district, this lesson has taken an unexpected turn. Students are now being instructed that regardless of the angle from which you view the painting, it’s impossible to determine the subject’s gender. Art history has certainly become more intriguing in recent years.

According to a social media post by Colorado state Representative Brandi Bradley, her 15-year-old son was informed by his teacher that Leonardo Da Vinci identified as gender fluid and that the Mona Lisa represents his feminine side. In her post, she expressed disbelief and mentioned it was back-to-school night, hinting at her protective instincts as a parent.

In a series of viral videos where she recorded the teacher’s explanation, it became clear that things were not much clearer. The teacher stated that the lesson aimed to illustrate differences between the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods, emphasizing how artists during the Renaissance had more freedom for self-expression compared to earlier times when they were constrained by church dictates.

When asked about “gender fluidity,” the teacher explained it arose from student inquiries and claimed county approval for including such content in lessons. While traditionally believed to be commissioned by Lisa Giocondo’s family, some recent scholars suggest that Mona Lisa might actually be a self-portrait of Da Vinci himself—a claim met with skepticism by Bradley.

She voiced concerns about exposing her child to concepts like gender fluidity due to their family’s biblical beliefs and noted visible LGBTQ symbols in classrooms made her question how inclusive those environments truly are for conservative Christian students. The teacher countered this perspective by asserting that individuals possess both masculine and feminine traits.

In subsequent posts, Rep. Bradley clarified her intentions weren’t meant as an attack on teachers but rather aimed at holding authority figures accountable for what they teach children—stating firmly against notions of gender fluidity while expressing concern over potential negative impacts on youth mental health stemming from such teachings.

Despite differing opinions on contemporary art theories regarding Da Vinci’s identity or intentions behind his work—especially given their speculative nature—Bradley argued these discussions should not be part of educational curricula for impressionable teenagers without solid evidence backing them up.
