Judge Charles‍ Simpson ruled that the actions of Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who fired a shot‍ at the ⁣police during the raid,‍ were the legal cause of her death, rather than the questionable ⁣warrant. But Goodlett knew that was false and told Jaynes the warrant did not yet have enough information connecting Taylor to criminal activity, prosecutors said. She added a paragraph saying the suspected drug dealer was using Taylor’s apartment as his current address, according to court records.

Two months later, when the Taylor shooting was attracting national headlines, Jaynes and Goodlett met in Jaynes’ garage to “get on the same page” before Jaynes talked to investigators about the Taylor warrant, court records said.

A fourth former officer, Brett Hankison, was also charged by federal prosecutors in 2022 with endangering the lives of Taylor, Walker and some of her neighbors when he fired into Taylor’s windows. A trial last year ended with a hung jury, but Hankison is scheduled to be retried on those charges in October.

The Western Journal has reviewed this Associated Press story and may have altered it prior to publication to ensure that it meets our editorial standards.

* Name

*

* Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

     function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! U.S. District Judge Charles Simpson ruled that the actions of Taylor’s boyfriend, who fired at police during the raid, were the legal cause of her death rather than an invalid warrant. The federal charges against former Detective Joshua Jaynes and former Sergeant Kyle Meany were announced by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2022 during a notable visit to Louisville, where he claimed that Jaynes and Meany, who were not present during the raid, knew they had falsified parts of the warrant and endangered Taylor by sending armed officers to her home. However, Judge Simpson stated in his ruling on Tuesday that “there is no direct link between the warrantless entry and Taylor’s death.” This decision effectively downgraded civil rights violation charges against Jaynes and Meany from felonies with potential life sentences to misdemeanors. The judge did not dismiss a conspiracy charge against Jaynes or another charge against Meany for allegedly making false statements to investigators.

When police executed a drug warrant at Taylor’s apartment in March 2020, her boyfriend Kenneth Walker fired a shot believing an intruder was breaking in, hitting an officer in the leg. Officers returned fire, killing 26-year-old Taylor as she stood in her hallway. Simpson concluded that Walker’s actions became the proximate cause of Taylor’s death: “While the indictment alleges that Jaynes and Meany set off a series of events leading to Taylor’s death, it also states that (Walker) disrupted those events when he decided to open fire” on law enforcement.

Initially arrested for attempted murder of a police officer after firing at them, Walker’s charge was later dropped when his attorneys argued he did not know he was shooting at police officers. The U.S. Justice Department has stated it is reviewing this ruling and considering its next steps.

A third former officer involved in this case, Kelly Goodlett, pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges last year and is expected to testify against Jaynes and Meany during their trials. Federal prosecutors allege that days before serving the warrant on Taylor’s apartment—drafted by Jaynes—he falsely claimed to Goodlett he had confirmed with a postal inspector about packages being sent there by a suspected drug dealer; however, Goodlett knew this information was incorrect.

Two months later—when national attention focused on Breonna Taylor’s shooting—Jaynes met with Goodlett privately before speaking with investigators regarding their involvement with her case.

Additionally charged by federal prosecutors is Brett Hankison for endangering Breonna Taylor along with Walker and some neighbors when he fired into her apartment windows; his trial ended last year without reaching a verdict but is set for retrial this October

https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/6876fc8404424249a197e80902fbf3ae-scaled.jpg
[33651
10653,39129,33791,36794
post-2330317","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-boyfriend","tag-breonna-taylor","tag-federal-judge","tag-legal-ruling
https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/6876fc8404424249a197e80902fbf3ae-scaled.jpg
["GET
