U.S. District Judge Charles Simpson determined that the actions of Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who fired at an officer and struck his leg during a raid related to a drug warrant, were the primary cause of her death. Previously, it was ruled that a faulty warrant led to her death. Taylor’s death played a significant role in energizing the Black Lives Matter movement, especially following George Floyd’s killing months later.

In 2022, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced federal charges against former Detective Joshua Jaynes and former Sergeant Kyle Meany for their roles in falsifying parts of the warrant and endangering Taylor by sending armed officers to her home; however, they were not present during the raid. Judge Simpson stated that there was “no direct link” between the unlawful entry and Taylor’s death. This ruling effectively downgraded civil rights violation charges against Jaynes and Meany from felonies with potential life sentences to misdemeanors.

Simpson did not dismiss conspiracy charges against Jaynes or another charge against Meany for allegedly making false statements to investigators. He concluded that Walker’s actions were legally responsible for Taylor’s death, noting that while Jaynes and Meany may have initiated events leading up to her death, Walker disrupted those events by firing at police.

Additionally, one officer pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in 2022 and is expected to testify against Jaynes and Meany during their trials. Another officer faced federal charges for endangering Taylor and others when he shot into her apartment but resulted in a hung jury at trial.
