The Democratic party is attempting to frame Trump’s visit as a link to white supremacy, highlighting Howell’s past ⁢as a center‍ for⁢ Klan activities. Notably, Trump countered this narrative by reminding reporters that President Biden⁢ also visited the town in 2021 ‌without any racial implications brought up at the time.

The article notes that political campaigns are heavily focused on winning Livingston⁤ County, where Howell is located, given its significance in close state‍ elections. ⁢It critiques the Democrats for raising concerns about Trump’s visit while ignoring Biden’s prior ‍appearance in the same ⁣location. The emergence of modern racial tensions in Howell, including recent neo-Nazi rallies, is acknowledged, but the article emphasizes that both parties are ‌capitalizing on‍ the town’s importance rather than fostering any extremist affiliations.

Ultimately, the piece argues that the media’s portrayal of⁣ Trump’s visit as racially motivated is disingenuous, especially when contrasted with Biden’s earlier visit, ⁤which focused on infrastructure rather than race.

    Read more…

The latest faux controversy to envelop Donald Trump’s campaign has to do with the history of a small town in Michigan. The Democrats want to turn a Trump visit into a renewed debate about white supremacy.

If only they’d checked who’d visited before Trump did.

Howell, Michigan, is the county seat of Livingston County, which contains a not insignificant of Detroit’s suburbs. That makes it key for both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris to carry the area if they want to win a state that has, over the past few election cycles, been decided by razor-thin margins.

The faux controversy comes out the fact that the town, once upon a time, was a hotbed for Ku Klux Klan members and rallies.

The last vestige of this, officially, was former Klan grand dragon Robert E. Miles — who, according to Reuters, had a mailing address in the town but lived outside of it.

He died in 1992, over 30 years ago, and most of the rallies he held in Howell were in the 1970s, roughly a half-century ago.

However, race controversies occasionally pop up in Howell, particularly with a new generation of racists that attaches a totemic value to it. Last month, a small group of neo-Nazis rallied in the small town — which naturally led Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) to lump Trump in with that. Reuters’ headline regarding the Tuesday visit, for instance: “Trump pushes tough-on-crime agenda in town with historic links to white extremism.”

This works just fine when it’s printed without adversarial comment, as these things are in the media. When the press decided to ask Trump about the Harris campaign’s contention that Trump’s visit was racially motivated, he had just one question for the reporter who raised the matter.

“Who was here in 2021?” he asked.

“Joe Biden,” the reporter said.

Trump proceeded to laugh. “Thank you. Thank you everybody.”

REPORTER: Kamala’s campaign attacked you for being in this town because it’s associated with white supremacy.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “Who was here in 2021?

REPORTER: “Joe Biden”

PRESIDENT TRUMP: “Thank you.”

🖐️🎤 pic.twitter.com/QZQVDR9XK6

— Trump War Room (@TrumpWarRoom) August 20, 2024

And with that five-word bomb — “Who was here in 2021?” — Harris’ campaign was duly owned.

As President Biden is fond of saying, true story. Unlike when Joe Biden uses those words, however, it was actually true this time — and you won’t be surprised to find out that the specter of white supremacy wasn’t really brought up when he visited Howell the first time, either.

Instead, the local Livingston Daily noted that “Biden talked about the bipartisan infrastructure bill and his Build Back Better plan” during his 2021 visit.

Now, of course, crime is one of the major issues of the 2024 campaign, just as big honking infrastructure bills were part of the Biden administration’s case for visiting the state in the first place.

Yet, the Harris campaign is blasting Trump for having the event while not donning a hairshirt over what it called a “blatant display of racism and antisemitism in his name.”

Okay, then — has Kamala talked to her current boss about apologizing for visiting Howell without self-flagellating about the town’s past history of bigotry? After all, she was perfectly happy calling Joe a racist on the debate stage before she was handed the vice presidency.

As noted previously, while the town has mostly shed its KKK-tinged past, incidents have popped up with some regularity in the years since. If this was a major concern for the Democrats, they could have simply avoided it as a spot for a rally, right?

They chose it for the same reason Donald Trump chose it: In a state that’s too close to call, winning Livingston County could mean winning the presidency. This had nothing to do with sating neo-Nazis — a group that’s small, rebarbative, and anathema to the beliefs of both major party candidates. Attempts to pretend otherwise will end just as poorly as this did.

* Name

*

* Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

     function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! Democrats are attempting to use Trump’s visit as an opportunity to reignite discussions about white supremacy. However, they might have wanted to consider who had visited the town prior to Trump. Howell, Michigan, serves as the county seat for Livingston County and is significant due to its proximity to several suburbs of Detroit. This makes it crucial for both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris if they aim to secure victory in a state that has been decided by very narrow margins in recent elections.

The controversy stems from Howell’s past as a center for Ku Klux Klan activities and rallies. The last notable figure associated with this history was Robert E. Miles, a former Klan leader who reportedly had an address in Howell but lived elsewhere; he passed away over 30 years ago, with most of his rallies occurring in the 1970s—nearly half a century ago now. Nonetheless, racial issues occasionally resurface in Howell due to new groups of racists who find significance in its past. Recently, a small gathering of neo-Nazis took place there, which led Democrats and media outlets (often seen as one entity) to associate Trump with these events.

For example, Reuters headlined their article on Trump’s visit by stating: “Trump pushes tough-on-crime agenda in town with historic links to white extremism.” Such narratives thrive when presented without challenge from the press. When asked about Harris’s campaign claims that his visit was racially motivated, Trump simply responded by asking the reporter who had visited Howell previously: “Who was here in 2021?” The reporter answered “Joe Biden,” prompting laughter from Trump before he thanked everyone present.

With that succinct response—“Who was here in 2021?”—Harris’s campaign found itself effectively countered. As President Biden often says regarding true stories: this one actually holds up under scrutiny; during Biden’s own visit back then, discussions centered around infrastructure rather than race-related issues.

Now crime is again at the forefront of political discourse leading into the 2024 election cycle—similar themes were part of Biden’s rationale for visiting Michigan initially—but Harris’s team criticized Trump for holding his event without addressing what they termed “a blatant display of racism and antisemitism.” One might wonder if Kamala has discussed her previous criticisms directed at Joe regarding race while she herself campaigned there without acknowledging its troubling history.

While Howell has largely moved beyond its KKK associations over time, incidents related to racism still occur sporadically today. If this were truly such an important issue for Democrats, they could have chosen not to hold their rally there either! They selected it just like Trump did because winning Livingston County could be pivotal for success within such a closely contested state—a fact unrelated entirely to appeasing neo-Nazi sentiments or any similar group that neither major party endorses or supports

[33651
17269,5046,3634
post-2328401","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-kkk","tag-reporter","tag-trump
["GET
