Republicans&rsquo; bid to enforce an Arizona law requiring individuals to prove they&rsquo;re U.S. citizens when registering and voting in elections.<\/p>\n<p>Arguing on behalf of the administration, U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24A164\/322624\/20240816120403502_24A164%20Govt%20Response.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requested<\/a> that the nation&rsquo;s highest court instead allow a lower court decision &mdash; one prohibiting the implementation of provisions of the statute in question &mdash; to remain in effect for the November election.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8d9e80600ea798b025bcc4f802459766 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8d9e80600ea798b025bcc4f802459766\"><\/div>\n<p>As The Federalist previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/10\/republicans-ask-scotus-to-greenlight-arizonas-proof-of-citizenship-requirement-for-voter-registration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, the 2022 law mandated residents to show documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) when registering via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizona-can-reject-voter-registrations-without-citizenship-proof-court-rules\/\" title=\"Arizona can reject voter registrations without citizenship proof, court rules\">state voter registration forms<\/a>. The statute also required such proof for individuals submitting mail-in ballots and voting in presidential contests.<\/p>\n<p>(In Arizona, individuals who do not provide DPOC when registering to vote are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/12\/elon-musk-rightly-says-arizona-doesnt-verify-federal-voter-citizenship-but-the-feds-dont-let-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">permitted<\/a>&nbsp;to do so as &ldquo;federal-only voters&rdquo; and cast ballots in federal elections).<\/p>\n<p>The Republican National Committee and Arizona&rsquo;s GOP legislative leadership filed an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/10\/republicans-ask-scotus-to-greenlight-arizonas-proof-of-citizenship-requirement-for-voter-registration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency application<\/a> with the Supreme Court on Aug. 8, asking the justices to place a stay on the lower 9th Circuit Court&rsquo;s decision and allow the law&rsquo;s DPOC requirements to take effect for the 2024 election. Nearly half the country&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-include-money-for-abortion-providers-in-1-9-trillion-covid-aid-package\/\" title=\"Dems Include Money for Abortion Providers in .9 Trillion COVID Aid Package\">state attorneys general<\/a> and several conservative organizations have since <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/16\/24-attorneys-general-ask-supreme-court-to-uphold-arizona-law-requiring-citizenship-proof-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filed amicus briefs<\/a> with the high court requesting a stay be issued.<\/p>\n<p>In the DOJ&rsquo;s Friday filing, Prelogar claimed &ldquo;applicants are not entitled to a stay&rdquo; and encouraged the court to &ldquo;deny&rdquo; such a request. Specifically, she argued that &ldquo;judicial intervention at this stage would undermine the orderly administration of the election, risking the disfranchisement of thousands of voters who have already registered to vote using the federal form.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ed332bb4c3bb14b3158462e1143248bd fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ed332bb4c3bb14b3158462e1143248bd\"><\/div>\n<p>The Biden-Harris administration was among several left-wing parties to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/justice-department-files-suit-block-arizonas-proof-citizenship-voting-rcna36808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sue<\/a> Arizona over the law shortly after its passage in 2022. <\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/azfreenews.com\/2021\/09\/over-11600-no-proof-of-citizenship-required-federal-ballots-cast-in-2020-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AZ Free News<\/a>, more than 11,600 individuals voted via &ldquo;federal-only&rdquo; ballots during the Grand Canyon State&rsquo;s 2020 election.
