On Monday, several demonstrators were arrested after straying from a city-sanctioned parade route and dismantling the initial layer of security fencing. The protest, organized by the Coalition to March on the DNC, began gathering at Union Park around noon, just a few blocks from the United Center where President Joe Biden was set to deliver his keynote address later that evening. The march commenced around 3 p.m. Central Time.

The approved route directed protesters westward from Union Park along Washington Boulevard, then one block north before continuing west to Park 578, where they breached security. They were expected to proceed further west toward Damen Avenue before heading north to Lake Street and returning east toward Union Park.

When questioned by the Washington Examiner about whether more police should have been present at Park 578, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson dismissed this notion. He stated, “We’ve protected First Amendment rights; that’s what we’ve done.” He attributed any failures not to local law enforcement but rather to what he described as an “extreme Republican Party” undermining democracy.

Police stationed between two layers of security quickly responded when protesters broke through and arrested at least one individual. Following this incident, approximately 300 officers in riot gear were deployed to Park 578 for crowd control and made additional arrests—totaling at least six—while clearing out demonstrators.

As police worked on dispersing protesters from the park, chants arose questioning their presence in riot gear: “I don’t see a riot here.” Although Chicago police did not comment directly on the breach itself, both the Chicago Police Department and DNC’s Public Safety Joint Information Center released a statement later confirming that while demonstrators had breached part of anti-scale fencing near the convention’s outer perimeter on August 19th, law enforcement quickly contained it without any threat posed to protectees within.

Protest organizers indicated last week their intention to contest the permitted parade route since it did not align with their original request for marching directly alongside the convention center’s security perimeter.
