The agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=mcl-168-32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">operates<\/a> within the Office of Secretary of State <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/jocelyn-benson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jocelyn Benson<\/a>, a Democrat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d2a1194d48209e1c68eaef6ce1f123d9 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d2a1194d48209e1c68eaef6ce1f123d9\"><\/div>\n<p>In his letter to West&rsquo;s campaign, Elections Director Jonathan Brater <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/08\/16\/michigan-disqualifies-cornel-west-november-election\/74835299007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>, as USA Today described, that &ldquo;the affidavits of identity submitted to the Secretary of State&rsquo;s Office in June for West and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-pass-bill-critics-say-defunds-police-and-reject-proposal-to-condemn-calls-to-abolish-police\/\" title=\"Democrats Pass Bill Critics Say Defunds Police And Reject Proposal To Condemn Calls To \u2018Abolish\u2019 Police\">vice presidential running mate<\/a>, Melina Abdullah, were not properly notarized.&rdquo; Former state Democrat Party Chair Mark Brewer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2024\/08\/16\/cornel-west-disqualified-from-michigan-ballot-over-notary-problems\/74831400007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> brought a challenge to the affidavits on July 23 as part of his work with Clear Choice Action, a Democrat-affiliated super PAC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/03\/14\/biden-third-party-super-pac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seeking<\/a> to keep left-leaning third<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-democratic-heavyweights-are-rallying-behind-biden-campaign\/\" title=\"Prominent Democrats unite in support of Biden campaign\">-party presidential candidates<\/a> off the November ballot.<\/p>\n<p>West&rsquo;s campaign was first notified about the challenge on July 26 and did not respond by the Aug. 2 deadline, according to Brater. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Your affidavit of identity was not notarized in compliance with the laws of the state where it was notarized (Colorado), and therefore is not a valid notarization under the Michigan Law on Notarial Acts,&rdquo; the elections director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/08\/16\/michigan-disqualifies-cornel-west-november-election\/74835299007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Brater gave the West campaign five days to file a rebuttal to the disqualification, according to USA Today. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-93d5d737a4f901f0d24b285712485a8f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-93d5d737a4f901f0d24b285712485a8f\"><\/div>\n<p>Democrats&rsquo; bid to keep West off Michigan&rsquo;s fall ballot is not an anomaly, but part of a concentrated effort to deny battleground state ballot access to left-of-center candidates who could hamper Vice President Kamala Harris&rsquo; electoral prospects. <\/p>\n<p>Last <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wisconsin-jill-stein-harris-trump-lawsuit-405e8bae8ff9becfa81a1360708d59a0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wednesday<\/a>, David Strange, a Democratic National Committee (DNC) official, filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) seeking to bar the Green Party from having a presidential candidate (Jilly Stein) on the state&rsquo;s November ticket. Strange also filed a similar complaint challenging West&rsquo;s Wisconsin ballot access earlier this month, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/how-democrats-are-seeking-to-block-3rd-party-candidates-from-wisconsins-ballot\/ar-AA1p2P2y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The WEC dismissed Strange&rsquo;s complaint against the Green Party on Friday, arguing that, as the Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wxpr.org\/election\/2024-08-19\/election-officials-keep-green-party-presidential-candidate-on-wisconsin-ballot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">summarized<\/a>, the filing &ldquo;names commissioners as respondents and they can&rsquo;t ethically decide a matter brought against them.&rdquo; A DNC official reportedly claimed the organization plans to file a lawsuit in court to have Stein removed from Wisconsin&rsquo;s 2024 ballot.<\/p>\n<p>A Democrat-led effort to remove Stein from Nevada&rsquo;s fall ballot was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/14\/nevada-judge-smacks-down-democrat-bid-to-keep-green-party-off-2024-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">struck down<\/a> by a state judge last week. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-03b06d2998bac533a24ab7bfebfe5201 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-03b06d2998bac533a24ab7bfebfe5201\"><\/div>\n<p>Democrats have also sought to remove independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from the November ticket in various battleground states such as <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-carolina-election-kennedy-presidential-ballots-ef370ba559d8f97a0c6751ef2e9231cf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Carolina<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rfk-jr-kennedy-pennsylvania-ballot-29485a3d4878635749b48136a15d9d27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pennsylvania<\/a>.
