On August 8, a medalist from this year’s Olympic Games in Paris shared his concerns about the quality of his medal on Instagram. Nyjah Huston, a Team USA skateboarder who won bronze in Men’s Skateboarding on July 29, posted a video stating that some sweat and minor wear had caused his medal to deteriorate. Jagger Eaton, another Team USA skater, secured silver while Japan’s Yuto Horigome took home gold.

In the video, Huston expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the Olympic medals. He noted that while they look impressive when new, after being worn against his skin and passed around among friends for a weekend, they don’t hold up as well as expected. He showcased his medal to the camera and remarked on its rough appearance and chipping.

Despite being newly awarded, Huston’s bronze medal showed signs of damage. A follower humorously commented that it looked like it was won in 1982. TIME reached out to organizers of Paris 2024 for clarification and received confirmation that they are aware of reports regarding damaged medals shortly after distribution. They stated that they are collaborating with Monnaie de Paris—responsible for producing and ensuring quality control of the medals—and will assess any reported damage alongside the athlete’s National Olympic Committee.

The representatives emphasized that Olympic medals are highly valued by athletes and any damaged ones will be replaced by Monnaie de Paris with identical engravings to the originals.
