Dr. Gene Kritsky from Mount St. Joseph University in Chicago reported to WMAO-TV that this year’s large brood is linked to an increase in bites caused by the oak leaf itch mite. He noted that this phenomenon isn’t unprecedented; after the decline of Cicada Brood XIII seventeen years ago, residents in Chicago with oak trees began reporting similar bite complaints following the cicada emergence. The oak leaf itch mites are believed to be responsible for a rise in red bug bites this summer, with cicadas inadvertently contributing to their spread.

Kritsky explained that these mites were discovered within the egg nests of Brood XIII cicadas. Dr. Carlos Paxtor, a pediatrician at Carolina Pediatrics & Piedmont Medical Center, added that while these mites are always present, their population has surged due to an abundance of food provided by female cicadas laying hundreds of eggs for them to consume.

These minuscule creatures measure less than a quarter millimeter and are too small for the naked eye to see, according to Paxtor. He cautioned that avoiding areas with trees won’t guarantee safety since they can travel through the air and reach other locations as well. The main concern regarding these bites is how individuals react; scratching with unclean hands can introduce germs and lead to infections.

Originating from Europe, these mites were first identified in Kansas in 2004 and have since spread across regions from Illinois down to Texas. Although nearly invisible without magnification, they appear reddish-tan with a shiny exoskeleton as described by Penn State Extension.

While the cicada emergence may have ended, oak leaf itch mites feeding on cicada eggs can still cause itchy rashes resembling pimples.
