Surveys even suggest Senate races that were once leaning toward the Republican candidate are now toss-ups or leaning toward the Democratic contender.

Democratic strategist Stefan Hankin joked that asking him whether the party is worried about overconfidence is “like asking someone eating an ice cream if they are concerned about calories.”

“Sure the correct answer is yes, but let me enjoy my ice cream,” Hankin told the Washington Examiner.

But although Hankin did concur overconfidence can be a problem, he said, “In this case 2016 is not so far behind us that there is going to be full unadulterated confidence without concern.”

“2022 was different in that the confidence in the ‘red wave’ was not adjusted for the fact that Roe [[v. Some can get charged up, others can get complacent, others could feel defeated. So, I think we all have to be careful about using polls to predict behavior since they are just a snapshot at a given time and that snapshot affects what the next picture looks like.”

“My sense is that campaigns are well aware that polls can make some potential voters complacent and overconfident,” the government and politics professor wrote. “In part, that is why you see so much discussion from candidates about the race being close or them being the underdog.”

Regardless, New York delegate Michaelle Solages underscored that Democrats are ready “to get this across the finish line” before November.

“This is new energy that I haven’t even seen in 2016 or under [former President Barack] Obama,” Solages, a New York state lawmaker, told the Washington Examiner. “I feel like there’s like a newfound energy that I haven’t seen before but also a determination to get this across the finish line because we’ve seen it slip through our fingers before.”

Democrats are approaching their convention in Chicago with a sense of optimism, buoyed by a new nominee and renewed confidence. However, following the unexpected loss of Hillary Clinton in 2016, party delegates and strategists are cautious not to underestimate Vice President Kamala Harris’s momentum. They understand that Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz (D-MN), will only maintain public support if voters feel they are genuinely on their side. Bob Mulholland, a California delegate and former adviser to the state party, expressed this sentiment by stating that many sleepless nights lie ahead for them.

Colorado delegate Jeri Shepherd acknowledged that Democrats learned a tough lesson about complacency from Clinton’s surprise defeat to Donald Trump in 2016. She recounted how her partner from Wisconsin often questioned Clinton’s absence from key states during the campaign, leading him to predict her loss after the election results came in. New York delegate Mark Poloncarz also reflected on Wisconsin’s narrow outcome—Trump won by less than one percentage point—attributed partly to Clinton’s lack of campaigning there.

Poloncarz noted that those involved with Harris’s campaign are diligent and leaving no stone unturned. He emphasized that while he respects Hillary Clinton, she faced unique challenges due to her history with the Clintons and unfair attacks against her. He believes the current atmosphere is different and feels America is ready for its first female president.

Nathan Gonzales from Inside Elections pointed out that Democrats have learned from past mistakes; they now recognize that elections aren’t decided until all votes are counted—a lesson reinforced by memories of Clinton’s victory party in 2016 turning into disappointment.

Kyle Kondik of Sabato’s Crystal Ball remarked on how Clinton attempted to broaden Democrats’ traditional electoral map but failed to secure crucial states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. In contrast, polls suggest Harris has expanded President Biden’s reach into Sun Belt states such as Arizona and Georgia.

Democratic strategist Stefan Hankin humorously compared concerns about overconfidence among Democrats to someone enjoying ice cream while worrying about calories; he acknowledged it can be an issue but noted many still remember lessons from 2016.

Christopher Hahn, an aide to former Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), advised candidates against becoming too confident regardless of circumstances. He highlighted how Republicans misjudged voter sentiment regarding issues like abortion rights after Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Kondik observed no signs of overconfidence among Democrats currently; they seem focused on critical battlegrounds rather than making poor decisions based on inflated confidence levels seen previously among Republicans before Biden entered the race.

Michael Hanmer from the University of Maryland cautioned against relying too heavily on polling data since it can influence voter behavior unpredictably—sometimes leading them toward complacency or defeatism rather than motivation.

Despite these concerns about potential pitfalls related to overconfidence or complacency stemming from polling data, New York delegate Michaelle Solages emphasized a newfound energy within the Democratic Party as they prepare for November: “This is new energy…a determination we’ve seen slip through our fingers before.”

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/hillary-clinton-kamala-harris-2024.webp
[538
33169,4387,3685,38354,32076
post-2325877","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-washington-examiner","tag-2016-election","tag-chicago","tag-democrats","tag-political-landscape","tag-washington-examiner
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/hillary-clinton-kamala-harris-2024.webp
["GET
