Deborah Cunningham-Skurnik, a regional director for the California Democratic Party, shared with the Washington Examiner that this year’s convention feels unique. “I’ve been waiting for this,” she stated, noting that the party’s messaging is resonating strongly with Democrats and even moderates who are eager to volunteer and contribute. Nearly 500 Californians are heading to Chicago to celebrate Harris’s nomination for president and Governor Tim Walz’s nomination for vice president. Over 4,000 credentialed delegates will gather in the city from Monday through Thursday for nightly televised events aimed at energizing supporters.

Cunningham-Skurnik, who has attended previous conventions as a delegate—supporting Bill Clinton in 1992 and Barack Obama in 2012—believes this convention will be particularly historic. As a lifelong feminist with a degree in history focused on women’s studies from UCLA, she sees Harris’s candidacy as fulfilling her dream of having a woman president.

She remarked that President Joe Biden’s recent decision to endorse Harris has given Democrats hope of preventing former President Donald Trump from reclaiming the White House. After securing her nomination earlier this month, Harris made history as the first Black woman nominated by a major party while also navigating one of politics’ most chaotic months marked by Biden’s withdrawal and an assassination attempt against Trump. With roots in California and parents from India and Jamaica, Harris has energized voters nationwide, raising over $300 million within just one month.

Cunningham-Skurnik highlighted how Harris is bringing positivity not only to California but also across key states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada where large crowds have gathered at rallies. Former Sonoma County Mayor Sandra Lowe echoed these sentiments while preparing for her trip to Chicago; many friends expressed regret about not signing up early enough as delegates.

The DNC will feature various speakers each night along with performances while adopting an extensive party platform addressing issues such as reproductive rights and immigration policy during caucus meetings where delegates can discuss pressing topics like poverty.

Giovanni Chavez of California Young Democrats noted an exciting resurgence among young voters now that Kamala Harris leads the ticket.
