It highlights that cobalt is essential for ⁢improving battery life and energy density in ⁢electric vehicles (EVs), with ⁤a typical EV battery ⁤containing over 17 pounds of cobalt. Despite the high⁣ demand, particularly driven by the alternative energy ‌movement, the⁣ supply chain faces significant challenges due to the primary sourcing of cobalt from ⁢the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where⁤ artisanal mining occurs under‌ dangerous and exploitative conditions.

The DRC dominates global cobalt production, contributing around 74% in ⁣2022, which raises ethical concerns over human rights violations. Additionally, new regulations under the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act require specific mining ⁤and processing ⁤criteria that producers in DRC and Indonesia do not meet, complicating supply further. As the demand for cobalt continues to rise while conventional sources face scrutiny, the potential for domestic mining‍ opportunities becomes appealing for investors, albeit against ⁣a backdrop of serious ethical ⁤and logistical challenges.

    Read more…

Disclosure: Some of the links below may contain affiliate links at no additional cost to you and may earn Liftable Media a commission on purchases. And strictly from that perspective, their prices are based on supply and demand. Were that the only consideration when considering an investment, the whole process would be a lot more straightforward.

But where government regulations are concerned, nothing should be straightforward. And that’s impacting one metal critical to the alternative energy movement …

Cobalt: More Demand Than You Thought

You might not realize it, but cobalt is one of the most critical metals when it comes to modern battery technology. That’s because cobalt helps increase battery life and energy density (the amount of energy that can be stored in a battery).

Today, in a typical 400-pound EV battery, you’ll find a little over 13 pounds of lithium — and over 17.5 pounds of cobalt!

And demand for cobalt goes far beyond batteries. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, cobalt is used in everything from industrial to commercial to military applications.

“Superalloys, which are used to make parts for gas turbine engines, are another major use for cobalt. Cobalt is also used to make airbags in automobiles; catalysts for the petroleum and chemical industries; cemented carbides (also called hardmetals) and diamond tools; corrosion- and wear-resistant alloys; drying agents for paints, varnishes, and inks; dyes and pigments; ground coats for porcelain enamels; high-speed steels; magnetic recording media; magnets; and steel-belted radial tires,” the USGS survey noted.

Add these points up, and it’s easy to see that global demand for cobalt is massive.

Further, the USGS estimated that the total world reserves of cobalt amount to 7.6 million metric tons. That’s about one-third the amount of the world’s lithium reserves. And given that a typical EV battery today uses more cobalt than lithium, that poses a potentially massive supply challenge.

In light of that, battery makers have been adjusting the chemistry they use to make batteries, so that in the future they will require less cobalt. But that doesn’t reduce the demand. It only extends it further across all the applications that require it.

And where does all this cobalt come from?

The World’s Persona Non Grata Supplier

There are a couple of challenges when it comes to meeting that demand.

The first problem is that roughly 80-90 percent of cobalt is produced as a byproduct of copper and nickel. That means the economics of the copper or nickel mines have to be compelling if any cobalt is going to be produced at all.

There is, however, a technique called “artisanal” mining that can yield up to 10-15 times higher grade cobalt than typical industrial mining. (And roughly one-fifth of the supply today is produced via that technique.)

And that’s the second problem. “Artisanal” is a euphemism for mining by hand, and it is used exclusively in the Democratic Republic of Congo. That mining is done by impoverished locals under severe conditions that violate a slew of human rights — starting with horrifically unsafe conditions and spiraling down from there.

Yet despite the primitive and dangerous conditions, the DRC has been and continues to be the largest producer of cobalt in the world.

In 2022, it produced nearly 145,000 metric tons of cobalt. (Roughly 74 percent of the world’s supply that year.) Its closest competitor was Indonesia which produced just 9,454 metric tons. The rest of the world pales in comparison.

The Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act is really a sizable giveaway program (roughly $360 billion) for businesses operating in the renewable energy sector. But it comes with some sizable restrictions as well.

According to a 2023 report from the Cobalt Institute: “The Act stipulates that a certain percentage of the value of critical minerals in a battery be mined or processed in the US or in a country with which it has a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), in order to qualify for the credits, as defined below. In addition, batteries must not contain components that are manufactured or assembled by a foreign entity of concern (FEOC) as well as critical minerals that are extracted, processed, or recycled by a FEOC …”

And you’ve probably guessed by now that the two largest producers of cobalt (the DRC and Indonesia), which represent nearly 80 percent of the mined cobalt in 2022, aren’t in compliance with the IRA’s rules.

Unfortunately, the rest of the world’s production falls woefully short of what’s needed to refine cobalt feedstock in the U.S. or any other compliant countries.

Obviously, the idea of supporting the DRC’s horrible mining practices is repugnant. But trying to balance the global needs for the metal against the largest sources of its production, it’s easy to see the math doesn’t work.

And that would likely make any reasonably successful domestic mine worth a very close look for investors.

* Name

*

* Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

     function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! Metals and minerals are classified as commodities, meaning their prices are determined by supply and demand. If this were the only factor to consider when investing, the process would be much simpler. Unfortunately, government regulations complicate matters significantly—especially for one metal that is vital to the alternative energy sector: cobalt.

**Cobalt: Greater Demand Than You Realize**

You might not know that cobalt plays a crucial role in modern battery technology because it enhances battery life and energy density (the amount of energy stored). In a standard 400-pound electric vehicle (EV) battery, there’s just over 13 pounds of lithium but more than 17.5 pounds of cobalt! Moreover, cobalt’s applications extend well beyond batteries; according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), it is utilized in various sectors including industrial, commercial, and military uses. Cobalt is essential for producing superalloys used in gas turbine engines as well as components like airbags in cars; catalysts for petroleum and chemical industries; hardmetals; corrosion-resistant alloys; drying agents for paints; dyes; porcelain enamels; high-speed steels; magnetic media; magnets; and steel-belted tires.

Given these diverse applications, global demand for cobalt is substantial. The USGS estimates total world reserves at around 7.6 million metric tons—approximately one-third of global lithium reserves—and since current EV batteries require more cobalt than lithium does pose significant supply challenges ahead. Battery manufacturers have begun modifying their chemistry to reduce future reliance on cobalt but this doesn’t lessen overall demand—it merely spreads it across all its necessary applications.

**Where Does All This Cobalt Come From? The World’s Unwelcome Supplier**

Meeting this growing demand presents several challenges. Firstly, about 80-90% of cobalt production occurs as a byproduct from copper or nickel mining—meaning those mines must be economically viable before any cobalt can be extracted profitably.

There’s also an artisanal mining method capable of yielding up to ten times higher-grade cobalt compared to conventional industrial methods (currently accounting for roughly one-fifth of today’s supply). However, “artisanal” refers specifically to hand-mining practices predominantly found in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where impoverished locals work under extremely unsafe conditions that violate numerous human rights standards—from hazardous working environments downwards. Despite these dire circumstances, DRC remains the largest producer globally with nearly 145 thousand metric tons produced in 2022 alone—about 74% of worldwide output—with Indonesia trailing far behind at just over nine thousand metric tons.

The Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act represents a significant financial incentive program ($360 billion) aimed at businesses within renewable energy sectors but comes with strict stipulations too: A certain percentage value from critical minerals used must either come from U.S.-mined sources or countries with Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with America—to qualify for credits outlined therein—and batteries cannot contain components manufactured or assembled by foreign entities deemed concerning nor critical minerals sourced from such entities either.

As anticipated by now—the two leading producers—DRC & Indonesia—which together accounted for nearly eighty percent mined last year do not comply with IRA regulations while other global production levels fall short regarding refining capabilities needed within compliant nations like America itself.

Clearly supporting DRC’s exploitative mining practices raises ethical concerns yet balancing global demands against primary production sources reveals an unsustainable equation making any successful domestic mine highly attractive prospects worth considering by investors

[33651
5533,38295,12739,6478,38296
post-2325392","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-challenges","tag-cobalt","tag-commodities","tag-investing","tag-market-analysis
["GET
