Public confusion is evident as voters may be swayed by‌ the euphemistic framing surrounding “reproductive⁢ rights.”

In Missouri, current laws ban abortion except in medical emergencies. A proposed amendment seeks to change this by adding ‍a “right to reproductive freedom” to the state’s‌ constitution, <a href="https://www.conservativenewsdaily.net/breaking-news/d-c-authorities-wont-autopsy-recovered-bodies-of-these-aborted-babies-police-are-hiding-barbaric-crimes-pro-lifers-say/" title="D.C. Opponents of the amendment raise concerns ⁣about potential risks to women’s‌ health and the removal of ⁤legal recourse for negligence in cases related to abortion. Similarly, Arizona voters will also face a decision on a related amendment in November. these developments reflect ongoing tensions ‌surrounding abortion rights across the United States.

Missouri and Arizona officially joined this week the ranks of six states that have fallen prey to extremist-led efforts to enshrine abortion until birth in state constitutions via proposed amendments.

A majority of U.S. adults oppose Democrats’ plans to legalize abortion through birth. While most U.S. adults are against the Democrats’ initiatives to legalize abortion up until birth, voters in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, and South Dakota will soon decide whether to permanently allow abortions at any stage of pregnancy in their states this November.

In Missouri specifically, Republicans had an opportunity to counteract the Democrats and abortion advocates’ misleading tactics aimed at introducing unrestricted abortion into this conservative state by passing legislation that would strengthen the constitutional amendment process. As reported by Federalist Staff Writer Shawn Fleetwood in May, GOP senators had enough votes to end a 50-hour filibuster initiated by Democrats but chose instead to adjourn without taking action.

This decision prevented them from safeguarding both their state and voters’ pro-life values from those intent on expanding the influence of the abortion industry following the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson ruling. Currently in Missouri, abortions are only permitted in medical emergencies; however, a proposed amendment put forth by Missourians for Constitutional Freedom seeks to enshrine a “right to reproductive freedom” within the state constitution.

The language of this amendment is intentionally vague but claims it will allow individuals within Missouri “to make and carry out decisions about all matters relating” to what it terms “reproductive health care.” Nevertheless, official ballot language clarifies that it would authorize “abortion at any time during a pregnancy.” Additionally, it would prevent regulations intended for protecting women undergoing abortions and eliminate civil or criminal liability for anyone who performs an abortion that results in harm or death.

Stephanie Bell from Missouri Stands with Women expressed concern that this measure strips away rights from those who lose children due to negligence during pregnancy or childbirth by denying them recourse for malpractice claims.

Sue Liebel of SBA Pro-Life America cautioned that if passed, this amendment could make Missouri as extreme as California regarding late-term abortions while also obligating taxpayers to fund such procedures. She noted that under this all-trimester amendment framework—without health and safety regulations—the state’s Planned Parenthood facilities could pose risks given their history of legal violations.

In Arizona too—following recent certification from its Secretary of State—voters will consider an amendment aimed at establishing what Democratic leaders like Vice President Kamala Harris have described as a “fundamental right” to abortion within its constitution. Presently banned after 15 weeks—a stance supported by most Americans—the proposed language ties access not only around “viability,” which remains undefined but also allows healthcare professionals significant discretion over determining when an abortion is necessary without fear of penalties for assisting pregnant individuals seeking one throughout their pregnancies.

Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and producer of The Federalist Radio Hour with contributions featured across various media outlets including The Daily Wire and Fox News; she holds degrees in political science and journalism from Baylor University

https://thefederalist.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot-2024-08-15-at-12.21.31%E2%80%AFPM-e1723742533513.png
[546
4472,38247,38246,8584,36292
post-2325178","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-federalist","tag-arizona","tag-ballot-amendments","tag-extreme-abortion","tag-missouri","tag-reproductive-rights
https://thefederalist.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot-2024-08-15-at-12.21.31%E2%80%AFPM-e1723742533513.png
["GET
