However, on Wednesday night, both factions had reason to celebrate: Minouche Shafik has stepped down as president of Columbia University. Shafik’s tenure lasted just 13 months and ended following a series of pro-Gaza protests that often escalated into violence at the New York City campus. According to The New York Times, Jewish students expressed feelings of insecurity and lack of support, while pro-Hamas demonstrators were angered by Shafik’s decision to call in police to disperse a violent encampment that had overtaken an academic building, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. In her statement, she mentioned that this period had significantly impacted her family and others in the community.

Shafik stated that after reflecting over the summer, she believed stepping down would best help Columbia navigate its upcoming challenges. She announced her resignation now so new leadership could be established before the new term starts. House Republican Conference Chairwoman Rep. Elise Stefanik from New York praised her resignation, asserting it was inevitable given Shafik’s inability to protect Jewish students and her negotiations with pro-Hamas activists.

While Shafik did acknowledge during congressional testimony that calls for genocide are hate speech—unlike Harvard’s Claudine Gay or Penn’s Liz Magill—she failed to provide adequate measures for ensuring Jewish students’ safety. When she finally intervened against the encampment—which should not have been allowed in the first place—she faced backlash from both pro-Hamas groups and far-left individuals like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Reports indicated that pro-Hamas protesters celebrated Shafik’s resignation enthusiastically upon hearing the news. Alongside Claudine Gay and Liz Magill, who also resigned this year amid controversy at their institutions, Shafik’s departure appears more like a capitulation than voluntary retirement; it followed closely after several Columbia professors resigned due to leaked offensive messages shared during an event about Jewish life on campus.

Shafik exemplified indecision when confronting blatant evil; these protesters were not merely advocating for human rights but were calling for violence against Zionists—a sentiment echoed by student protest leader Khymani James who infamously stated such individuals needed to be killed.

As many noted recently regarding James’ deleted apology post-rant on social media—and with no confirmation about his return next semester—it seems likely he will be back despite his inflammatory remarks.

This situation illustrates what happens when one tries to appease both good and evil; ultimately evil prevailed under Shafik’s leadership which should have ended much sooner than it did this summer. While it’s better late than never regarding her departure from Columbia University leadership roles in academia should not be considered again for Minouche Shafik

[33651
38229,38227,37337,38230,38228
post-2325074","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-campus-activism","tag-college-president-resignation","tag-columbia-university","tag-higher-education-news","tag-pro-hamas-protests
["GET
