This competitive race could influence Senate control, with both candidates prioritizing crime as a key issue. A recent poll indicates that crime is a top concern for voters in Maryland’s D.C.-adjacent counties, including Montgomery and Prince George’s.

Alsobrooks’ latest advertisement claims a 50% decrease in violent crime during her tenure as Prince George’s County’s chief prosecutor from 2011 to 2018. While this statistic is accurate, she does not mention that violent crime increased significantly after she became county executive in late 2018. According to FBI data, overall violent crime rose by over 30% from 2018 to 2022, and local police reports indicate carjackings surged nearly 500% between 2019 and 2023.

In her ad, Alsobrooks asserts that it was her responsibility as a prosecutor to ensure family safety: “I believe anyone who commits a heinous crime or harms a child must be held accountable.” She also mentioned making investments aimed at recruiting and training more police officers through her proposed budget for fiscal year 2025—a plan that includes a $7.6 million increase (2%) for the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Previously, Alsobrooks supported police reforms following George Floyd’s murder in 2020; notably diverting $20 million intended for new police training facilities towards establishing a mental health center for inmates while violent crimes were on the rise—homicides increased by 58%, robberies by 19%, and aggravated assaults by15% from one year to the next.

A spokesperson for Alsobrooks did not address these rising crime statistics during her time as county executive but emphasized that under Alsobrooks’ leadership as chief law enforcement officer of Prince George’s County there was indeed a significant drop in violent crimes alongside an increase of about22%in the police budget since she took office.

The campaign has previously highlighted endorsements from various law enforcement officials while maintaining vague statements regarding comprehensive changes needed for safety and justice on their website.
