Current law does not require the Secret Service to do that. It would also require the director of the Secret Service to secure all elevated positions within firing distance.

This is Torres’s most recent sponsored legislation in the wake of the shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, that left one attendee dead and three, including the former president, injured. The New York Democrat also introduced legislation that would strip the responsibility to investigate financial crimes from the Secret Service, which is part of the agency’s original mission when it was established in 1865.

Torres also introduced a bill with Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) that would strengthen Secret Service protections for Trump, President Joe Biden, and independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The assassination attempt briefly brought both Democrats and Republicans together in a rare moment of solidarity to denounce political violence and spurned legislation action on both sides of the aisle.

The shooting also brought several House committees together in a bipartisan manner to scrutinize the Secret Service’s security failures that allowed Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, to climb on top of a building about 160 yards away from Trump with an AR-15-style rifle.

At a House Oversight Committee hearing, then-Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle was blasted by both Democrats and Republicans who denounced her inability to share virtually any details with the public. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) has introduced a bill aimed at increasing the Secret Service’s security perimeter at public events to a minimum of 500 yards, following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. This legislation, presented on Tuesday, would also grant the agency the authority to extend this perimeter in specific situations as necessary, which is not currently mandated by law. Additionally, it would require the Secret Service director to ensure that all elevated positions within shooting range are secured. This proposal comes in response to the recent shooting incident at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which resulted in one death and injuries to three others, including Trump himself.

Torres has also put forth other legislative measures since this event; one seeks to remove financial crime investigation responsibilities from the Secret Service—an original function of the agency since its inception in 1865—and another bill co-sponsored with Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) aims to enhance protection for Trump, President Joe Biden, and independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The assassination attempt prompted a rare moment of bipartisan unity among lawmakers who condemned political violence and called for legislative action from both parties. It also led several House committees to collaborate across party lines to examine security lapses by the Secret Service that allowed Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20 years old, to access an elevated position approximately 160 yards away from Trump while armed with an AR-15-style rifle.

During a House Oversight Committee hearing where then-Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle faced criticism from both sides for her lack of transparency regarding details of the incident—she resigned shortly after. A subsequent Senate hearing featuring acting Director Ronald Rowe and FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate provided additional insights but left some senators frustrated that no agents had been dismissed or reassigned due to these security failures.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) announced a bipartisan task force tasked with investigating this assassination attempt alongside an ongoing federal inquiry led by the FBI. The task force will be chaired by Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), representing Butler’s hometown; it includes several Republican members as well as Democratic representatives such as Jason Crow (D-CO), who will serve as ranking member.

The bipartisan task force commenced its investigation on Monday by sending requests for documents and briefings related to the shooting from key officials including Rowe and Attorney General Merrick Garland among others. They aim for their group to be recognized as primary investigators despite other House committees launching their own inquiries into this matter; they expect a formal report by December 13th along with interim updates throughout their investigation process

[538
4762,38012,34163,32076
post-2323825","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-washington-examiner","tag-legislation","tag-ritchie-torres","tag-secret-service","tag-washington-examiner
["GET
