I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

So far, all of the outlets that received emails have not published them but have said the emails contained vetting materials that were used to look at Sen. The FBI is currently looking into this breach and any potential risks it poses to the Democratic campaign, with indications that threats against Trump’s campaign may be linked to Iran. Several media outlets, including Politico, the New York Times, and the Washington Post, received internal communications from Trump’s campaign but have refrained from publishing them.

A key distinction between this incident and the Russian hack of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign is how news organizations have handled the information they obtained. Unlike during Clinton’s campaign when her chairman John Podesta’s emails were leaked by WikiLeaks and widely published, these outlets are only reporting on the hack itself without disclosing specific details about what they received.

Additionally, Roger Stone—a long-time Republican operative associated with Trump—had his personal email account compromised in this attack. Podesta has accused Stone of having prior knowledge about WikiLeaks’ release of his emails that were hacked by Russians. Stone was later convicted for obstruction and other charges related to his involvement in that incident.

In contrast to their actions in 2016 when they encouraged media coverage of Clinton’s emails, Trump’s current team has warned against any publication of their hacked materials. Steven Cheung, director of communications for Trump’s campaign stated that any media outlet sharing these documents would be serving “America’s enemies.” This stance sharply contrasts with Trump’s previous comments inviting Russia to find missing emails during a press conference.

So far, none of the outlets that received emails have made them public; however, they indicated that these contained vetting information regarding potential vice presidential candidates like Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). A spokesperson for The Washington Post explained their decision not to publish was based on evaluating authenticity and public interest regarding such materials.

Politico also noted its editors found questions surrounding how they acquired these documents more significant than their content itself; meanwhile, The New York Times did not provide a reason for its choice not to publish

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/hillary-clinton-and-donald-trump-2016.webp
[37998,19536,32119,35288,37997
post-2323750","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-clinton-2016","tag-cybersecurity","tag-election-interference","tag-political-campaigns","tag-trump-campaign-hack
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/hillary-clinton-and-donald-trump-2016.webp
["GET
