While a jury acquitted her of identity fraud and conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, she was convicted of three counts of attempting to influence a public servant, one count of conspiracy for criminal impersonation, first-degree official misconduct, violation of duty, and failing to comply with the secretary of state’s regulations. Peters faced accusations for using another person’s security badge to grant access to an expert associated with My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell, misleading officials about that individual’s identity. Lindell has promoted various conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 election results and monitored Peters’s trial through his website while sending out daily updates that included her statements and prayer requests.

Prosecutors argued that Peters sought notoriety and became obsessed with voting irregularities after engaging with those who questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election outcomes. Some charges were dismissed by the court because it ruled that she did not use Gerald Wood’s identity without permission in those instances. Following the verdict, Peters took to X (formerly Twitter) claiming that Dominion Voting Systems—responsible for her county’s election system—and state election officials’ lawyers had stolen votes. She vowed to continue fighting until what she considers “the truth” is revealed.

During closing arguments, prosecutor Janet Drake stated that Peters allowed an individual posing as a county employee access to images from the hard drive of the election system before and after a software update in May 2021. Drake asserted that Peters aimed for personal glory by wanting to present herself as a “hero” at Lindell’s symposium later on. Defense attorney John Case contended that Peters needed access records from the voting system in order to investigate potential foreign interference during ballot counting.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser remarked on how this verdict serves as a warning against illegal tampering with electoral processes or systems: “I want to be clear — our elections are safe and fair,” he stated.
