However, they insisted it was merely due to an outdated algorithm. In what seems like another unlikely assertion of innocence regarding election manipulation by a major tech company, legal representatives for Google’s parent company Alphabet informed the House Judiciary Committee that their autocomplete algorithm prevented searches about the assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13 because of restrictions on political violence-related topics, as reported by National Review. Similar “errors”—a curious coincidence—also led to no autocomplete suggestions when users typed “President Donald” or resulted in news stories about Trump’s presumed opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, appearing instead of relevant information about him.

According to National Review, the attorney stated that these issues were resolved after being brought to Google’s attention. This response followed a detailed letter from Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican, outlining these concerns.

Jordan wrote: “The oversight from the Committee and Select Subcommittee [on the Weaponization of the Federal Government] has revealed how federal authorities have pressured or collaborated with technology firms like Alphabet to moderate online content.” He further noted that recent reports suggested Google might be interfering in the 2024 presidential election by censoring information regarding former President Trump’s ongoing campaign and specifically concerning the July 13 assassination attempt.

In response to this oversight inquiry from Congress members, Google’s counsel provided non-public details about issues with Search and Autocomplete along with efforts made for corrections while also offering a private briefing for committee members this week. During this briefing, Google’s explanations seemed unconvincing for phenomena noticed by many on social media platforms—including tech mogul Elon Musk.

In his letter, Jordan highlighted that Google’s counsel reportedly admitted queries related to Trump’s assassination attempt should have yielded results but did not appear due to outdated protections against political violence. Regarding why Trump’s name didn’t show up in autocomplete suggestions or why searching for him led users instead to news about Kamala Harris, Google attributed these occurrences either to bugs or unexpected predictions.

The phrase “bugs will occur” essentially serves as big tech’s version of “mistakes were made.” These bugs didn’t emerge spontaneously; they were programmed into software by engineers at Google.

Jordan posed several questions he wanted answered under each point raised in his letter; notably asking how Americans could trust similar issues wouldn’t happen again—an answer I can provide: they likely can’t because it’s Google we’re discussing here. This past week was understandably hectic for them given an ongoing major antitrust case; however one would expect more than just a casual acknowledgment like “whoops! Let’s fix it!” This situation represents significant election interference from one of the world’s largest corporations—not just one glaring error involving an overlooked assassination attempt but also erasing substantial parts of an administration along with news concerning a GOP presidential candidate.

If this scenario occurred outside America or didn’t favor Democrats politically there would undoubtedly be widespread outcry from figures such as Elizabeth Warren; yet now we hear nothing but silence from liberal circles in Washington—and we can probably guess why that is. It is quite telling how these algorithmic errors consistently seem biased towards one direction—particularly aligning with where Google typically stands as a corporate entity

[6371,6063,4133,36542,35087
post-2322851","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-censorship","tag-google","tag-news","tag-search-results","tag-trump-assassination
["GET
