(AP) — A house explosion in Maryland on Sunday resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left 12 families without homes, according to fire officials who cited a potential gas leak as a contributing factor. Residents reported feeling and hearing the blast early in the morning, which caused damage to several nearby houses in Bel Air, located approximately 30 miles northeast of Baltimore. Firefighters were dispatched around 6:40 a.m. after receiving reports of a gas leak and an outdoor gas odor, as stated by Oliver Alkire, a master deputy with the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Alkire noted that a neighboring home sustained significant damage, with one woman treated for injuries on-site. Additionally, at least one utility worker present was injured; two utility workers were already in the area addressing an electrical issue, but it remains unclear if this was connected to the explosion.

Investigators are currently assessing how many homes were affected and determining the extent of damage from the blast radius while firefighters continue searching through debris for any additional victims.
