If the County School Facility Occupation Tax is approved, sales taxes in DeKalb County would rise by 1%. John Frieders, Vice Chairman of the DeKalb County Board, informed The Center Square that local school districts are facing financial difficulties. “As you may know, nearly all school districts in Illinois have various financial challenges,” Frieders stated. He believes that the school boards and superintendents have managed taxpayer money responsibly. “It’s easy to suggest they could always cut costs, but realistically there’s only so much you can do with a dollar,” he remarked. Having previously served on a school board himself, Frieders noted that increasing the sales tax is an alternative way to finance schools without raising property taxes. He emphasized how burdensome property taxes can be for landowners—whether they own farmland or residential properties—calling it a significant concern. According to the Tax Foundation, Illinois consistently ranks among states with high tax burdens; it has one of the highest average property tax rates in the nation and also faces substantial state and local taxation costs overall. While implementing this new County School Facility Occupation Tax would raise sales taxes, it would not reduce property taxes. Currently, DeKalb County’s maximum sales tax rate stands at 8.25%. A majority of local school boards have endorsed placing this measure on the ballot for this fall’s election on November 5th; counties can set this specific tax rate at increments up to 1%. Members from Community Unit School District 428 expressed their support for allowing taxpayers to vote on this proposal which stipulates that all generated funds will be dedicated solely for educational facilities as well as funding for school resource officers and mental health professionals

[6513,6413,37750,37749,32076
post-2322324","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-funding","tag-illinois","tag-sales-tax","tag-school-districts","tag-washington-examiner
["GET
